Controlled My Cat's Suffering
I have been using the AeroKat Asthma Chamber for over 7 years now. �I had 2 cats that suffered from asthma (and suffering it myself, it broke my heart knowing how they felt). �Prior to AeroKat, they were getting Depo shots every 3 months, so they had to be tested for diabetes, etc. �It also caused them great stress going to the vet for a shot so often.
I expected to have a severe problem getting them to accept the inhalater, but letting them smell it for several days it turned out to be no problem. �With the AeroKat Chamber, the medication is going directly into their lungs where they need it, and not throughout their bodies and causing damage to other organs. �

ATTENTION ALL ORIENTAL SHORTHAIR & SIAMESE OWNERS!!
I cannot say whether the AeroKat on its own is a good or bad product, but what I can say is that if you have an Oriental Shorthair (or Siamese I would imagine), even the small mask may not be a tight, and sealed fit. Not sure if it has more to do with the long muzzle, or the general size of my kitty's face. We haven't even started the meds yet, but we have been training with the small mask for a while now. My cat is usually pretty compliant with meds, and things being done to her, but even with treat rewards, she is not adapting well to the mask. Could be because the mask ends up fitting her all the way to her eyes. This is very frustrating, as I really would like to see if the meds help her extremely bad coughing, and assumed asthma. I'm giving the product three stars, only because it SEEMS like a good idea. Sorry, if you have an "angle head" style cat, and this discourages you. I just know I would have liked a warning before getting my hopes up.

It takes three adults to hold my cat down and administer this but I think it will get better over time. There is a little green flap in this device that shows you how many breaths your cat has taken which is vey helpful. -

Can I puff the medication into the Aerokat before putting it on my cat's face, so the puff doesn't alarm her? Will the medication stay in the Aerokat??

The best time to puff the medication into the Aerokat is when your cat starts to inhale. This can be seen by the indicator moving toward your cat’s face. If the puff is startling the cat, it is all right for you to puff the medication into the AeroKat spacer before putting it up to your cat’s face. After you puff the medication into the end of the device, immediately place the AeroKat mouthpiece over your cat’s mouth. If too much time is taken between the puff of the medication and placing the mouthpiece over your cat’s face, the medication may settle in the AeroKat. If this were to occur, less medication will be inhaled by your cat which may reduce the effectiveness of the medication. Talk with your cat’s veterinarian if you are concerned about how to use the AeroKat chamber. Thank you, VetRxDirect

How do you determine what size mast to use? Karen?

Karen, Typically, it is recommended that the mask fit snugly over the mouth and nose, without squishing your pet's face uncomfortably. With some longer-snout breeds, the manufacturer recommends going with a slightly smaller mask and covering the nostrils only, or that occasionally, small animal muzzles require a mask which is designed for anesthesia use in order to have a good seal for the Aerodawg/Aerokat device. You are not necessarily looking for an airtight seal, however, any gaps between mask and face will permit medication to be lost. There are videos available online that detail the proper administration using an Aerodawg, the manufacturer has information here: http://www.trudellmed.com/animal-health/aerodawg. The Aerokat and Small Aerodawg each come with a small mask (1.5 inch diameter) and a medium mask (2 inch diameter) and the Large Aerodawg comes with a medium mask (2 inch diameter) and a large mask (3 inch diameter). Shayleigh, The AeroKat chamber is the same chamber as the AeroDawg, but the masks can differ. The AeroKat and the AeroDawg Small come with the same size masks, a small (1.5 inch diameter) and a medium mask (2 inch diameter). The AeroDawg small is intended for dogs 20 pounds and under. The AeroDawg also comes in an additional size, the AeroDawg Large, which comes with a medium mask (2 inch diameter) and a large mask (3 inch diameter). The medication that the AeroKat is used to administer are all prescription medications and require approval from the veterinarian before dispensing. They do not come with the AeroKat, which is an over-the-counter medical device used to assist in the administration of inhaled medications. Nancy, The AeroKat device is usually effective for most cats, however you could ask your veterinarian if their office has a mask you could try. We do carry the replacement mask at a lesser cost than the AeroKat chamber. Using the replacement mask may help you determine if your cat will tolerate the entire AeroKat chamber. I am working on getting my vet to contact you for the inhaler approval. once he contacts you, do I need to provide my vet with my account number? how do I know it's been approved in order to place an order??

Debra, We do not accept prescriptions from veterinarians until an order has been placed, as it is difficult to match a prescription with an order if the order is not placed first. Once an order is placed, we will send a fax to the veterinarian for approval on the prescription. It will have your contact information, your pet's information, and the medication you are requesting. This should allow the clinic to match the request with your pet's file there, and the clinic can either fax back the approved prescription, or call us to do a verbal authorization.
