Amlodipine Besylate (Compounded) Rx
VetRxDirect Pharmacy will cease compounding specialty medications as of August 31, 2023. We will continue to sell commercially manufactured drugs. This has been a very difficult decision to make. We know how important compounded medications can be for the pet-patients that we serve. Unfortunately changes in regulations, combined with variability in state laws, means that our pharmacy does not believe it can continue to provide customers with a cost effective medication option for compounds.

Transdermal is the way to go!
From UndisclosedComments about Amlodipine Besylate (Compounded) 0.625mg/0.1mL, Transdermal Gel, per SyringeNot having to force a pill down the throat of my 17 year old cat on a daily basis is allowing the quality of her life to continue to be good and our relationship has not suffered. I had a cat years ago who needed daily meds in his old age and he started running from me despite hardly being able to walk. That memory is still so sad to me. I am so happy that transdermal meds are an option for Squirrel!-

We got it onboard!
From UndisclosedComments about Amlodipine Besylate (Compounded) (Chicken) Suspension, 0.625mg/mL, 30mLOur vet recommended this drug for our 21 year old cat for possible high blood pressure. Zia has been notoriously hard to medicate! She received her first dose yesterday, and seemed to enjoy the taste. We are hoping that the chicken flavor makes it easier to stick to the regimen. -

Great product, customer service and company
From UndisclosedComments about Amlodipine Besylate (Compounded)My cat has medical issues that require that he take this and an additional medication for the rest of his life. This particular medication is very expensive through the vet but I did some searching and found the same medication at VetRxDirect at a substantial savings. I am very happy with the product the people at VetRxDirect and will definitely continue to use them. -
My cat pill headquarters
From UndisclosedComments about Amlodipine Besylate (Compounded)I was able to buy the correct dosage for my cat versus trying to cut a small pill into four uneven pieces (with a pill cutter). Also, excellent service. -

BP Meds
From new jerseyComments about Amlodipine Besylate (Compounded)These capsules for my 16 yr old cat are small & I hide them in a "Pill Pocket", which he seems to get down with no problem. I have also tried to dump the powder from the capsule into his food but because the capsule is so small, it's almost impossible to get open & then I can't get all the powder out of it! So the pill pockets are the best bet for these. Pricing here is much cheaper than my local Vet & they only offered a pill form. -
I would purchase this product again

Great Customer Service
From Alexandria, VA, USAComments about Amlodipine Besylate (Compounded)I had a very senior dog, Rosie with very high blood pressure. I contacted VetRx looking for an alternative to the pills that Rosie detested. VetRx recommended a chicken flavored formulation that allowed me to administer the medication effectively. Sadly, Rosie past on Saturday, but thanks to VetRx her life was extended by two years. She was over 17 years old when she passed.

my cat was prescribed .625mg/0.1ml gel how many doses per syringe??
-
Our compounded transdermal products come in 1mL syringes. The amount of doses per syringe will vary based on the amount of gel your veterinarian prescribes for your cat. For example, if you are administering 0.1mL per dose then you will get 10 doses in each syringe.

How long is the compounded liquid suspension of amlodipine good for? I see timeframes for the pills and transdermal gel, but not the liquid suspension.?
-
The amlodipine besylate compounded suspension uses an oil base vehicle for compounding. It is recommended that the suspension be used within 90 days of compounding. The beyond-use-date or date at which the product should no longer be used, will be listed on the label.

Our vet prescribed our dog Amlodipine Besylate 1/8 of 2.5mg. That comes out to about 0.3125mg. Our local pharmacies only sell it at 2.5mg but then it's almost impossible to cut it into 1/8 portions. With your 0.625mg capsule, is it possible to cut it in half to get 0.3125? We normally use a pill cutter to cut medication into smaller portions.?
-
We cannot make capsules in that exact dosage, however, there is a liquid suspension that could be dosed to your veterinarian's specifications. Please contact your veterinarian regarding the appropriate dosage form for your dog.

I was told amlodipine can be given to a cat transdermally (gel to rub in ear or exposed belly). I see you mention 'transdermal' on the web page. How successful has this been? Do you have any data on the reliability of the dose on the same animal after being tested for a few weeks? Thanks for your help!?
-
Typically, a transdermal amlodipine is reserved for pets that have a difficult time taking oral medications. Amlodipine is available as a tablet or as a compounded capsule, liquid suspension, or transdermal dosage form. By measuring the blood pressure your veterinarian can determine if the medication is working effectively. Since the transdermal form needs to be absorbed across the skin, it may be less reliable or increased variability with dosing compared to oral formulations. However, some pets have an excellent response to the transdermal treatment option. Discuss these options with your veterinarian to find the appropriate dosage form for your pet.

I am llooking at the .625 amlodopine in cchicken suspension . How many pills is that??
-
The concentration of the suspension in question contains 0.625 mg (milligrams) of amlodipine besylate drug per 1 mL (milliliter) of suspension. Capsules are available in various strengths, therefore the answer to your question depends on the strength of capsules you are inquiring about. For example the total active drug in 30 mL of an amlodipine besylate 0.625mg/mL suspension is equivalent to 30 capsules of amlodipine besylate 0.625 mg. Please contact VetRxDirect if you would like additional information regarding our compounded medications. Thank you, VetRxDirect

Do you make Amlodipine Besylate in a chicken flavored liquid suspension in beef flavor? If so, could you change my prescription for Rosie to beef flavored to mix it up for her. Thanks, Denise ?
-
Amlodipine Besylate suspension can be prepared with either a chicken or a beef flavor for your pet. We would be happy to honor your request, but you will first need to contact us through our toll-free customer service number: 1-866-761-6578, or at [email protected]. Please give our customer service member both your full name and your pet’s name and repeat your request as well. This is for quality assurance purposes. If your pet has been refusing to take the medication because of its flavoring, or will not take the medication once it has been beef flavored, we recommend you follow-up with your pet’s veterinarian. It is important to let the veterinarian know about any missed doses of this medication. He or she can also recommend other options for your pet’s therapy if necessary. Thank you, VetRxDirect

My cat has been prescribed 1/4 of a 2.5 mg tablet to take once a day. She is difficult to "pill" even with pill pockets. I was told there is something that can be administered by rubbing it on the ear. Do you make something like that??
-
Susan, What it sounds like you're describing is a transdermal gel, which is a method of administering medication to the hairless part of the inner ear (ear pinna) on a cat. This doesn't require the cat to have to swallow anything, making it a much easier method of administering medication for many cat owners. We do compound an amlodipine transdermal gel in the dose that your cat needs, 0.625mg. You would look at the amlodipine transdermal gel in 0.625mg/0.1mL strength. A syringe would have ten doses, and would last ten days. The transdermal gel currently has a shelf life of 30 days, so we could dispense a maximum of 20 days of medication - in your case, 2 syringes at a time, to ensure that you're able to use all the medication you receive. You should talk to your veterinarian about switching to the transdermal gel, if it sounds like a good option for you and your cat. Thank you, VetRxDirect
