My dog was prescribed Amlodipine 5mg, dosage 1/2 tablet twice a day. Is this oral suspension at 2.5ml twice a day the equivalent? Is it for dogs as well as cats or cats only? Also, is there another flavor besides tuna since this is for a dog, not a cat??
-
If your dog was prescribed amlodipine 5mg, ½ tablet would be equivalent to 2.5mg. Currently, our pharmacy offers a compounded amlodipine suspension. The amlodipine suspension is chicken flavored and is available in 0.625mg, 0.7mg, and 1.25mg strengths. This medication, benazepril, is a different medication that is not equivalent to amlodipine. Please consult with your veterinarian with any further questions or concerns regarding this medication in your dog.

I'm having a hard time splitting the 5mg tablet into 4 equal parts (the prescribed dose). Can I substitute with either the 2.5mg or 1.25mg suspension (and then adjust the amount) so that it's easier to administer to my dog??
-
Changing from the 5mg tablet to the 2.5mg tablet or the oral suspension would require a new prescription authorization from your vet. Splitting a tablet in half or carefully measuring an oral suspension versus trying to quarter a tablet would increase the likelihood that your pet receives the proper amount of the medication with each dose. Speak with your veterinarian about your concern to achieve the best possible outcome for your pet. Let us know if you have any further questions. Thank you, VetRxDirect
