My vet prescribed this for Mast Cell Cancer in my 55 pound dog, but the directions are vague- 4 to 8 mg 2 to 3 times a day. Any more specific protocol suggestions for this use??
-
According to Plumb's Veterinary Handbook, most recommendations for the antihistamine chlorpheniramine range from 0.2-0.5 mg/kg by mouth every 8-12 hours. Using commercially available oral tablets, doses are usually rounded off to the nearest 2mg with doses ranging from 2-8 mg. Based on your dog's weight of 55 lbs (25 kg), the dose would range from 5-12 mg every 8-12 hours. It is always advisable to start with a lower dose and adjust the dose upwards as needed.

I have a tabby that is overweight, aprrox. 7 yrs. The vet charged me over 300 plus a script for 20 pills of Chlorpheniramine, Any suggestions? My cat throws up the pills, Do you have a liquid form/suggestions??
-
Chlorpheniramine, which is commonly used in cats to prevent allergic reactions and to treat pruritus (itchiness), is available as 4mg and 8mg tablets, 2mg chewable tablets, and a 2mg/5ml syrup (Aller-ChlorⓇ, OTC) and 4mg/5ml suspension (Pediox-SⓇ, Rx only). To have the formulation of the product changed, you should first speak with your cat’s veterinarian, he or she will need to write a new prescription or will recommend an available over-the-counter product which may be less expensive. Depending on the dose prescribed, you can also speak with your pet’s veterinarian about the possibility of splitting tablets (that are not extended release) to obtain the appropriate dose. Vomiting can potentially be a side-effect of chlorpheniramine, you should discuss this possibility with the veterinarian as well. Thank you, VetRxDirect

How many 4 mg tabs can I give my 60 lb lab??
-
The dosage of chlorpheniramine can differ based upon your pet’s indication for use (sedation, itchiness, or allergies). The optimal frequency of administration and the strength used is also based upon symptom resolution. Adverse effects of this medication include sedation, dry mouth or eyes, decreased frequency of urination, and diarrhea. We recommend speaking with your dog’s veterinarian first to determine the correct indication for use and most appropriate dose of chlorpheniramine. The veterinarian can also properly weigh your pet for accurate dosing. Thank you, VetRxDirect

Why did they quit making the 12mg??
-
It looks like there is one manufacturer that does still make the 12mg strength, however VetRxDirect no longer carries that strength. We suggest contacting a local pharmacy to see if they may carry it. Thank you, VetRxDirect
