Why is this for dogs only. I got a prescription for my cat 20mg at 1/4 tablet daily. Is this ok to use on dogs??
-
Clomicalm contains clomipramine, an antidepressant, and is labeled by the manufacturer for use in dogs only. According to Plumb's veterinary drug book, clomipramine can be used in both dogs and cats to treat certain behavior disorders. Continue following your veterinarian's instructions for your pet, and consult them if you have further questions about their prescription.

Can I use clomicalm and diazepam??
-
Clomicalm (clomipramine) is a tricyclic antidepressant used to treat behavior problems in dogs such as obsessive compulsive disorder and separation anxiety. Diazepam is a benzodiazepine used as a muscle relaxant, anticonvulsant, or to treat various anxiety disorders. Diazepam causes central nervous system (CNS) depression, in dogs this presents as sedation, lethargy, and lack of voluntary coordination of muscle movements.. Using clomicalm concurrently can increase CNS depression. Caution should be used if these two medications are going to be taken together. Talk with your veterinarian about using these two medications together. Thank you, VetRxDirect

What is the generic for Clomicalm?. Is it as effective as the brand name? Have there been any reports of side effects or problems with this generic? What is the cost of the generic for 80mg tablets??
-
The generic form of Clomicalm is clomipramine. Because there is no generic form currently approved for veterinary use, the generic human product is used. The human-label product is available in 25mg, 50mg, or 75mg tablets and not supplied by VetRx. VetRx compounds clomipramine capsules as high as 40mg. If you wanted the exact dose, your pet could take two 40mg capsules. The price for one clomipramine 40mg capsule is $1.29. If you chose to give your pet two 40mg capsules, the price per dose would be $2.58. The side effect profile of the generic is the same as brand name Clomicalm and includes dry mouth, vomiting, diarrhea, and sedation. There is no reason to think the generic would be any less safe or less effective than the brand name. Thank you, VetRxDirect

he warning on this medication came out 8/2012 it is now 1-2014 when will Clomicalm be available again?
-
Lea, There is currently a nationwide shortage of clomipramine, the active ingredient in Clomicalm. While Clomicalm was available for a brief time, the shortage has caused additional back-orders and we no longer have any Clomicalm available. We do have some strengths of clomipramine that we compound in-pharmacy available. You should check with your pet's veterinarian about whether a compounded strength of clomipramine would be a suitable alternative for your pet. Thank you, VetRxDirect
