can cyclosporine be bought over the counter? like at pet smart?
-
Sissy, Cyclosporine is a prescription medication, and is not available over the counter. We can accept prescriptions in a couple of different ways: once an order is placed, we can send a fax over to your pet's veterinarian which they can fax back, or give us a call to approve, or the veterinarian may choose to issue you a written prescription when you can then mail in to us. Thank you, VetRxDirect

I have an 8 year old Cavalier that has been itching for 1 1/2 years. He did very well on Prednisone (5 mg) but I feel guilty leaving him on that although I am after his quality of life, at this point. This drug is so expensive…is it safer than Prednisone??
-
Cyclosporine is an immunosuppressant that may have similar efficacy as a corticosteroid (i.e. prednisone) but has a different adverse effect profile associated with its use. Common adverse effects seen with cyclosporine are vomiting, anorexia (loss of appetite), and diarrhea; with other more severe, but less common, side effects, reported. Both medications require follow-up and regular monitoring by your veterinarian. We recommend contacting your veterinarian to have this discussion regarding the risks versus benefits for each of the treatments to determine the medication that is right for your pet. Thank you, VetRxDirect

was given this for my dog. she has a growth growing up her eyelid. It went away when I used it but now its back again. Do you think I should use these drops again??
-
Jean, You would need to verify the beyond use date or expiration date on the bottle to confirm the drops are still in date and could be used. It would be best to contact your veterinarian to discuss the returning symptoms before using the drops again. Thank you, VetRxDirect

My dog refuses to take the capsule by mouth. Last night, I finally resorted to opening the capsule and mixing it with a very small amount of flaked chicken. She did eat it. Is there any way I can get her to take the capsule??
-
I use a small chunk of string cheese, melted for 5 seconds in the microwave, pill inserted into the cheese while hot, then cooled so that the pill won't come out. It's basically a cheese pill pocket. My dog will eat it then.
Community Answer -
The liquid form is very bad tasting stuff, so that would be my last resort. I think the pill pockets are a good idea, but if the caps you have been trying are manufactured by TEVA, I know that the ones I had from that manufacturer smell awful -- and didn't really clear up my cat's skin. I never used the second TEVA box I had purchased, because when I reordered from VetRxDirect, they sent me the Watson brand, and they were so much better. My Vet had warned me that some of the generics aren't as effective as Atopica, but I tried them anyway. Now if VetRxDirect will keep sending me the Watson brand, I'll be happy, and my kitty's skin will be comfortable. If the caps smell bad, that might be the problem for your dog. The ones I ordered that came from Watson don't have any smell I can discern, and my cat's skin allergy has improved a lot since I switched to the Watson product.

Kathleen, Pill pockets and pill wrap may be an option to hide the capsule. Cyclosporine (modified) is also available as an oral solution and may be an option if capsule administration becomes too difficult. The cyclosporine (modified) oral solution is available in a 50ml bottle and a 100mg/ml concentration. Thank you, VetRxDirect

In what country is your generic cyclosporine, 50 mg produced??
-
Howard, Because it is a generic, we carry several different manufacturers for the cyclosporine. Right now, our 50mg is produced by a company called Teva, and per the labeling on the box, it was produced in the Czech Republic by Teva Czech Industries. Some of our other strengths are currently from a company called Watson, and the labeling on those packages says that it was manufactured by Banner Pharmacaps (Canada) Ltd, Olds, Alberta Canada. what dosage would I need to give a 117lb dog? she has been on prednisone for quite some time. Is this the cheapest product in this category?
-
Sandra, The dosage is dependent on the type of diagnosis for your dog, therefore your dog's veterinarian would be the best source for dosage information. Prednisone and cyclosporine are not considered to be in the same pharmacological category. They both have different mechanisms of action and may either be used individually (separately) or as combination therapy to reach a therapeutic goal. Prednisone is typically much less expensive than cyclosporine. Thank you, VetRxDirect /
