Katrina, The brand name Periactin tablet, approved for human use, is no longer available. Less expensive generic versions of this product are now available in the marketplace. Cyproheptadine was the active ingredient in the Periactin tablet. Cyproheptadine is used as an antihistamine and to treat itching in dogs and cats. It is also used as an appetite stimulant in cats. Possible side effects include sedation, lethargy and possible mucus membrane dryness. Contact your veterinarian if the sedation/lethargy becomes severe. Thank you, VetRxDirect

Can this medication be given to our cat long term, say for many months??

Tom, Cyproheptadine may be useful as an appetite stimulant in animals. Cyproheptadine is utilized less commonly for other indications such as the treatment of feline asthma, itching, allergies, inappropriate urination and sometimes as an adjunctive therapy for Cushing's syndrome or in animals with serotonin syndrome. Cyproheptadine is an antihistamine and may cause sedation and lethargy and drying effects and increased thirst. Long term of use of cyproheptadine is not uncommon however occasional lab work and routine follow-up by your veterinarian may be required. Thank you, VetRxDirect
