What are DL-Methionine Tablets for Cats and Dogs?
- DL-Methionine is a supplement that helps make the urine more acidic.
- This may reduce the formation of certain types of urinary stones.
Why do cats and dogs use DL-Methionine?
- Veterinarians may recommend a supplement like DL-Methionine to promote acidifying the urine, which may help prevent and treat certain types of stone formations and reduce odor from the urine.
What problems could my dog or cat have with DL-Methionine?

- Possible adverse effects include gastrointestinal upset. If given with food, methionine may have reduced side effects and increased efficacy.
- Methionine can be given with food or mixed in food unless otherwise instructed by your pet's veterinarian.
- If too much methionine is given or if overdosage occurs, it can lead to anorexia, uncoordinated muscle movement, and cyanosis (a blue or purple pigmentation of the skin due to low oxygen levels).
How do you use DL-Methionine?
- Give as directed by your veterinarian.
- Discuss the use of new supplements with your veterinarian before you start giving them.
What is in DL-Methionine?
- The active ingredient in DL-Methionine is Methionine, a nutritional supplement and urinary acidifier.
Will I get what I see in the picture?
- These DL-Methionine tablets are the VET Pharmaceuticals brand. You will receive the exact brand that you request.

pet urine ph/bladder health
From UndisclosedComments about DL-Methionine 500mg Tablet, 1000ctWe've been using this 3 times a day for a year now to keep the urine ph at 6-6.5 after Justice had struvite crystals and a bladder blockage which required him to have a costly surgery. Also helps prevent uti's by keeping the urine acidic. It's easy to give mixed into his food and it's a lot cheaper than the hundreds of dollars monthly for rx pet food for life especially if you have a picky eater like him! -

At the present time my 10.5lb. Pomeranian has crystals in his urine but no kidney issues. Can long term use of this medication cause kidney issues? What about anorexia??
-
According to the DL-Methionine product information, side effects of this medication do not include kidney issues from long-term use. One side effect of DL-Methionine is the loss of appetite, which may lead to anorexia. Please consult your veterinarian to discuss this medication and treatment options for your dog.

I need to know how big the tablets are for cats!?
-
The 200mg pills are 1 cm round, about half a cm wide. About the same size as the round motrin pills. I crush mine with a mortar and pestle and mix in wet food though

I am considering DL-Methionine for a dog with a 9pH. She is on a low dose of prednisone and 2 50mg tramadol per day. Are there any interactions with these drugs??
-
Still, it's important to talk with your pet's veterinarian before starting any new Rx or OTC medication.
Verified Answer -
There are no known negative interactions with the combination of DL-Methionine, prednisone, and tramadol.

Is there a way of testing my dogs urine to see what the pH is without going to my vet??
-
There are products available to test the pH but you will want to discuss with your veterinarian if testing your pet's urine pH at home is appropriate. pH paper strips are good for approximations of pH, while a pH meter is more accurate and can be calibrated.

What is the size of this pill??
-
What shape and size are these pills ? I have had small round white ones and now I have large pills that I have to crumble in food from the Vet . A picture would be great :)?
-
DL-Methionine is available through VetRxDirect in 500 mg and 200 mg strengths. Both of the strengths are supplied as white, round tablets that are scored once for easy splitting. In addition, the 200 mg tablet is slightly smaller than the 500 mg tablet due to containing a lower strength of methionine. Thank you, VetRxDirect

Could you tell me how large the 500mg tablets are???
-
These tablets are thick and may be difficult for smaller animals to swallow. They are scored down the middle and can either be cut or crushed and added to food for convenience. Thank you, VetRxDirect

Hello, my cat has PKD. His creatinine level hovers around 3.2, and when I was living overseas, my vet put him on ketosteril. He had no problems on it. I returned to the US and found that methionine is the generic name for ketosteril and I have seen mixed recommendations on whether it is specifically for patients (human and feline) with kidney disease, or is not recommended for them. I'm confused. Also, is there a difference between methionine and "DL"-methionine? Thanks.?
-
Ketosteril is not available in the US. There is not a definitive answer on what ingredients it contains. Some formulations may contain methionine in addition to other amino acids, but methionine is not the generic for ketosteril. In the US, methionine is used to acidify urine for the prevention and treatment of stones and to decrease ammoniacal odor. Methionine should not be used (contraindicated) in patients with renal failure. There is D-Methionine and L-methionine, and the DL- is a mix of both chemical structures. The term methionine usually implies the DL-methionine mix. Talk with a veterinarian about the best treatment option for you cat's PKD. Thank you, VetRxDirect
