my nervous little Chihuahua
From Meridian MSComments about Fluoxetine (Generic) CapsulesWe have a little female Chihuahua that is a nervous wreck...she was mistreated by a former owner. Our vet recommended this medication for her and we give it in a little peanut butter every day around 5:00 pm so she will snooze well. Been using it for at least a couple of years now with great results. -
I would shop here all the time.

Fluoxetine for my nervous Chihuahua
From Meridian, MSComments about Fluoxetine (Generic) CapsulesHave been buying tablets for my little female Chihuahua for quite a while. When I saw the price for these capsules, I went based on price and only when they arrived discovered they were not tablets. However, they are small, and when included with a little peanut butter, they go down just as fast! She has done very well with the form of delivery. -
Life Saver!
From California, USAComments about Fluoxetine (Generic) CapsulesI have two dogs on Fluoxetine (Prozac) and it has proven to be beyond valuable and worth the money. My dog Walter, whom I adopted from my local shelter where I volunteer. I had worked with him for 14 months while he was held as live evidence in a cruelty case and we put him on Fluoxetine because of his increasing stress levels due to shelter life. It helped keep him calm enough to maintain his sanity and keep him mentally healthy enough to be able to come home and learn how to be a normal dog. In fact, we had 19 dogs in the whole group and we ended up placing 15 of them on Fluoxetine which has literally saved their lives. My second dog August, was placed on this medication because I had seen how well it worked with the shelter dogs. After I moved to a large property, her behavior changed and became problematic in regard to guarding "her" new yard. Fluoxetine has allowed her to still be herself and enjoy her yard but has calmed her intensity, which has pleased the new neighbors thankfully. The first dog Walter, is 82 lbs and is on 60mg, the second dog August, is 57 lbs and is also on 60 mgs. Some initial side effects are lethargy and reduced appetite, but dissipate after a few weeks once the dog becomes acclimated to the medication.

Q & A
-
Can the powder from the capsules be safely administered by emptying it into food, or should the pill be given fully intact??
-
The capsules may be safely split open and the powder contents emptied and mixed into food. It is important to monitor your pet and ensure they eat all of the food so that they receive the entire dose of the medication. While this could be an alternative to administering the medication to your pet, Fluoxetine powder can have a bitter taste, and may not be fully masked by food. Please consult with your veterinarian before using this technique as they may be able to offer tips or an alternative dosage form.

What size are the 10mg capsules? Are they a #3??
-
What should dosage be per pound of dog??
-
Generally the usual dose for a dog is 1-2 mg/kg by mouth once daily; however, dosing of fluoxetine should be determined by your dog's veterinarian and should be used in conjunction with a comprehensive behavior modification protocol.

What is the difference between the Fluoxetine Capsule and Tablet, because the tablets seem to be way more expensive. Thanks.?
-
The fluoxetine capsule and tablet dosage forms both contain the same active ingredient, fluoxetine hydrochloride. Pricing on the dosage forms can vary for a variety of reasons such as: manufacturing process, market exclusivity of dosage form, dosage form ingredient cost, etc.) If your pet is needing the commercially-available dose it would be cost effective to get the capsule dosage form. If your pet is needing a partial dose of the commercially-available medicine, such as half the dose, the tablet dosage form would be preferred due to the ability of splitting the dosage form.
