What are IV Sets for Cats and Dogs?
- Fluid administration is often prescribed for rehydration and electrolyte balancing.
- Cats or dogs with chronic renal failure or dehydration from other medical causes often need additional fluids and nutrients to restore appropriate hydration levels, help their system flush waste, and manage electrolytes.
- Your veterinarian may prescribe giving intravenous fluids that need to be delivered under the skin or “subcutaneously.”
- For subcutaneous fluid injection, you will need an IV Set.
- This IV Set includes inches of vented tubing. A bag holds the prescribed fluid. A needle at the end of the tubing is inserted into your cat’s or dog's skin, usually between the neck and shoulder blades.
Why do cats and dogs use IV Sets?
- If your pet has been diagnosed with kidney disease, diarrhea, dehydration, electrolyte abnormalities, or another disease that causes fluid loss, your veterinarian may prescribe subcutaneous fluid injections at home.
- Fluid therapy may also be used in pets that are vomiting or have a reduction in oral fluid intake.
- Needles and IV Sets are used with fluid bags of solutions such as Lactated Ringers Solution, Sodium Chloride, or Normosol R to administer fluids.

What problems could my dog or cat have with fluid administration?
- There may be some fluid accumulation. This should go away before the next time fluids are to be administered.
- Contact your veterinarian if you see signs of infection at the injection site or if your dog or cat develops a cough.
How do you use IV Sets?
- Your veterinarian will teach you how to administer the fluids. Follow your veterinarian's directions for use.
- Contact your local waste management or check SafeNeedleDisposal.org on how to dispose of the needles properly.
- Fluid bags and IV sets can be disposed of in the regular trash.

Great tubing for Sub-Q fluids
This is the best set I've ever used. Flows quickly so the tume needed to restrain a 20-year-old cat that really hates this procedure.
I order regularly and recommend to others.
Most Liked Negative Review
Good, but a little short
My cat gets fluids; he's wily, twitchy and deaf. This tubing gets the job done, but isn't my favorite.
I use an IV pole because it's easier to do it myself (my cat can sense my boyfriend's hesitation). I wish this was at least 12" longer to add more play. The top is push on versus the twist lock variety. I've gotten used to the push on tip, but the screw on variety seems more secure.

Can I purchase needles for administering the IV fluids from your site? I need NIPRO 0.9x25 mm needles. If not, do you have any suggestions for online purchasing of these needles? Thanks!?
-
We do sell needles but not the NIPRO brand. We sell the Terumo and Monoject needles and the 20 gauge 1 inch needles would be the size you are looking for. Unfortunately, we do not know which sites carry the NIPRO brand. Thank you, VetRxDirect

What is the Flashback Bulb part of this Venoset used for? My other I.V. Set doesn't have that on it.?
-
The flashback bulb on this Primary I.V. set is to determine if the syringe is placed properly in a vein. After the syringe is placed, a light squeeze on the bulb should draw up a small amount of blood ensuring the needle has not been pushed all of the way through the vein. Contact your veterinarian for information on I.V. placement technique and if using the flashback bulb is recommended for your pet. Thank you, VetRxDirect

Can this be reused or do you need a new one for each bag of fluid??
-
In general, a venoset is a disposable, sterile, gravity IV set used for subcutaneous (sub-Q) administration, or intravenous (IV) administration, of fluids or medications to pets. Replacing these sets frequently can be costly, however, Venoset tubing is subject to bacterial growth the longer it is in use. For this reason, strict attention should be provided to the tubing for any signs of cloudiness, film formation, or particulates which may suggest an infected line. Infected lines could lead to infections in your pet that could be life threatening, so also monitor for injection site tenderness or redness. Please contact your pet’s veterinarian to help in the determination of an infected line, the need for additional IV fluids, or the need for a new line each time a new bag is used. The recommendation often varies based upon the pet’s environment, the medication/fluid used, cost and frequency of administration. Your pet’s veterinarian will help you make the best decision. Thank you, VetRxDirect
