What is K-CIT-V (potassium citrate) for Dogs and Cats?
- K-Cit-V is a potassium citrate supplement for dogs to adjust their urinary pH.
- Potassium Citrate is often given to lower urine pH in dogs and cats to prevent and reduce urinary stones.
- High levels of uric acid or calcium in the urine can form crystals or stones in the kidneys or bladder, which can be a painful condition.
- As these stones move through pet’s system they can cause pain, nausea, and other side effects.
- Potassium citrate is also used to supplement low potassium levels to treat hypokalemia and reduce elevated levels of acid in the body to treat metabolic acidosis.
- Bladder stones are common in dogs and cats that have recurrent urinary tract infections.
- Cranberry also helps promote urinary tract health.
Why do cats and dogs use K-CIT-V?
- If your pet is prone to urinary stones or other conditions, your veterinarian may recommend an over-the-counter supplement like K-CIT-V.
- When the pH in your pet’s urine becomes imbalanced, it can cause crystals to form which leads to bladder stones.
- Diet issues, dehydration, and even certain breed types can increase the chances your dog or cat may suffer from this painful condition.
- Potassium Citrate can help lower the pH in urine and help reduce the formation of painful bladder stones.
What else should I know about K-CIT-V?
- Chewable tablets are easy to dose.
- Store at room temperature.
What problems could my dog or cat have with K-CIT-V?
- Do not give K-CIT-V to pets who may have high potassium levels due to severe renal or adrenal insufficiency.
- Discontinue use is stomach upset occurs.
How do you use K-CIT-V?
- Give as directed by your veterinarian.
- Potassium Citrate may be given with food or mixed into food. Follow your veterinarian's directions.
- Manufacturer's suggested use: Dogs, give 1 tablet per each 20 lbs of body weight twice daily. Dosage may be adjusted to maintain a uringe pH between 7 and 7.5.

This Medication Battles Cystinuria
From UndisclosedComments about K-CIT-V 100 Chewable TabletsMy male Dachshund was diagnosed with cystinuria when he was 9 months old. Our vet had to take his bladder out and remove the cystine stones that were clogging his urethra. Our vet recommended potassium citrate tablets morning and night with a special diet. It is still working to prevent a return of the stones.-

Q & A

My dog has been on Crananidan Extract for several months.PH was great a few months after beginning treatment but is starting to creep back up.Is the K-CIT-V a stronger formula? If too strong, can it cause the crystals to become the kind that won't dissolve??
-
Judie, The two products work by different mechanisms of action and can not be directly compared to each other. Crananidin Extract works by preventing bacteria from attaching to the inner lining of the bladder wall and allowing bacteria to be flushed out in the urine. K-Cit-V works by altering the urinary Ph. Also, there is a product K-Cit-V plus Cranberry, which is a combination product of the two. Please contact your pet’s veterinarian regarding which product is ideal for your pet. Thank you, VetRxDirect
