What is Levemir Insulin for Dogs and Cats?
- Insulin is a hormone that is naturally produced by the pancreas to convert sugar (glucose) in the blood to energy for the body.
- Insulin therapy is prescribed to dogs and cats with diabetes. Diabetic animals are either unable to produce their own insulin or cannot use it properly.
- Insulin helps treat diabetes in cats and dogs by normalizing the glucose level in the blood.
- The insulin in Levemir is Insulin Detemir, a U-100, long-acting insulin. U-100 means that each milliliter of insulin is divided into 100 dosing units.
Why do cats and dogs use Levemir?
- Insulin is prescribed to dogs and cats with diabetes mellitus to help lower their blood sugar.
- Insulin is an ongoing, supportive treatment for diabetes.
What else should I know about Levemir?
- Levemir should be discarded within 42 days after first puncture.
- Syringes and pen needles are sold separately.
- FlexTouch pens can be used with U-100 insulin syringes or pen needles.
- FlexTouch pens used with pen needles can only dose whole units. You cannot dial the pen to dispense a half unit.
- Vials should be used with U-100 insulin syringes.
- Store Levemir in the refrigerator.
- Levemir is not eligible for free shipping.
- Levemir must be shipped next day in cold packs.
What problems could my dog or cat have with Levemir?
- Insulin overdoses may be fatal. Contact your veterinarian immediately if your dog or cat is not acting normally.
- Signs of low blood sugar include weakness, depression, lack of energy, sluggishness, stumbling when walking, behavior changes, muscle twitching, seizures, or coma. It is a medical emergency if your cat or dog is unconscious or having a seizure.
How do you use Levemir?
- Insulin works best when given regularly - at the same times each day and in the same way regarding feeding, such as always after a meal. Follow your veterinarian's directions.
- Double check the dose every time before you give the insulin to prevent overdoses.
- Keep a source of easily given sugar, such as corn syrup or honey, on hand at all times in case of low blood sugar. Follow your veterinarian's suggestions.
What is in Levemir?
- The drug in Levemir is Insulin Detemir.
- There are different kinds of insulin classified by how quickly they work, how long they last, or when they have peak effectiveness.

Insulin works well, design of pen not good!
From UndisclosedComments about Levemir (insulin detemir injection)This brand of insulin has worked really well for my dog. The pen itself does not work well, it leaks when using the pen syringes, and you cannot accurately measure the units. I buy U-100 syringes and draw the insulin from the rubber stopper on the tip of the pen. This has made measuring much more accurate, and less wasteful. -
I will probably always order Levemir Flex Pen
From undisclosedComments about Levemir (insulin detemir injection)Hello Levemir flex pen really helps my 10 year old blind diabetic pup. After we had tried several others and it seemed nothing got his BG under 400. Vet Rx direct has been great. We have never had any problems. I appreciate them -

Q & A

Are there different needles. Does the insulin need to be refrigerated??
-
Levemir is available as a 10 mL multi-use vial and a 3 mL prefilled pen (FlexTouch). Pen needles and syringes are available in various needle lengths and gauges and are sold separately. When instructed to draw up Levemir using an insulin syringe, always use a U-100 syringe. Prior to first use, unopened vials and FlexTouch pens should be stored in the refrigerator. Once opened, vials may be refrigerated or stored at room temperature. After first use, FlexTouch pens should be stored at room temperature. It is advised to discard both products 42 days after first use. Please consult your veterinarian to determine which products are most appropriate for your pet.

My cat needs 1 unit of levimir 2x a day . So if I buy the flex pen I'd have to throw it out in 42 days? I'd be wasting medication and money.?
-
According to the manufacterer, opened Levemir FlexTouch pens should be stored at room temperature only (do not refrigerate) and discarded 42 days after first use.

We just got a vetPen by myerck to try on our diabetic dog. Does yours work the same in that you have to puncture the dog and hold the Pen in for what seems like forever for the dose to be given?? We were hoping you find one that you sort of press and release.....this one is actually making the injections worse.?
-
According to the manufacturer, the levemir insulin pen is to be held until the counter reaches zero and then count down from 6 to avoid leakage. Many of the other available insulin pens also have similar procedures. For further questions on what insulin option may be best for your dog you should contact your veterinarian.

How come I can buy nova rapid 10ml viles for 47 bucks from Canada. Seems like there is done bad folks in the USA overcharging?
-
Our prices are based off of recommendations from the manufacturer who supplies these U.S. labelled injections. All products we offer are FDA approved for use in the U.S., ensuring that this is tested for quality and a safe product for your cat. The Canadian source offering that price for that amount of vials cannot provide this same guarantee and may not be a reputable or reliable supplier held to similar standards.

I have been giving my dog 7 units twice a day for a year now and she is fighting me about it. I give it to her in the top neck area. Is there another place to give her the shot and would one of these pens be easier on her??
-
The back of the neck is the best place to give an insulin shot. You could also give it on the side of your dog's body above the front legs. The pens use the same length of needle as the syringes - the main difference is how you as an owner measure out the dose before administration. Please contact your veterinarian to determine the best place to give your dog insulin and whether the pen would be a better choice.

Does this include the levemir insulin itself. How many 1 unit doses? Do you sell the needles? How much are the needles??
-
This includes the Levemir insulin by itself, which always comes as 100 units of insulin per mL. Levemir is available as a 10mL vial with 1000 units of insulin or as a 3mL pen with 300 units of insulin. Levemir insulin is good for 42 days after the date it is first opened. VetRxDirect sells a variety of pen needles and insulin syringes. The price varies by manufacturer and quantity selected. Your veterinarian will determine if the pens or vials are best for your pet.
