What is the Methimazole Transdermal Gel for Cats?
- Methimazole is a prescription medication used to treat overactive thyroid glands in cats. While Methimazole can’t stop the condition, it will help your cat feel better and improve her quality of life.
- The active ingredient in each small, coated Felimazile tablet is methimazole, which reduces the amount of the thyroid hormone your cat’s thyroid gland produces.
- The medication used in the transdermal gel is the same as the tablets manufactured commercially but the difference is the delivery of the medication. Transdermal means across the skin.
- The transdermal gel is a thick gel containing methimazole which is applied to the hariless portion of the inner ear of your cat and is absorbed through the skin to the bloodstream.
- The gel will arrive in syringes marked for easy dosing and administration.
Why do cats use Methimazole?
- Cats may be prescribed Methimazole to treat overactive thyroid.
- Hyperthyroidism, or overactive thyroid, in cats causes weight loss, increased appetite, excessive thirst, hair loss, and more.
- While there is no permanent treatment for cats with hyperthyroidism, your veterinarian can help your cat feel better by regulating the thyroid with prescription Methimazole.
What else should I know about Methimazole?
- Manages symptoms of hyperthyroidism in cats.
- Flavored liquid may be easier to dose than tablets.
- Methimazole has a bitter taste. The transdermal gel allows easy dosing for cats that will not oral Methimazole.
- Looking for Felimazole tablets, Methimazole Generic Tablets, or Methimazole Liquid Suspensions?
What problems could my or cat have with Methimazole?
- Common side effects include vomiting, decreased appetite, and lethargy.
- Most side effects occur in the first 3 months of giving Methimazole and may be lessened by gradually increasing the dose. Always follow your veterinarian's directions.
How do you use Methimazole?
- Protective finger cots or examination gloves should be worn when applying this medication.
- Apply the transdermal gel to the hairless portion of the inner ear. Alternate ears receiving the medication.
- Pregnant women, women who may become pregnant, nursing mothers, and people with low thyroid levels should not handle Methimazole.
What is in Methimazole?
- Methimazole is an antithyroid agent that reduces the level of thyroid hormones in the body.
Will I get what I see in the picture?
- The Methimazole Transdermal Gel is a compounded medication. The ingredients will be mixed specially for your dog or cat in our pharmacy.
Is it important for my cat to finish all of the Methimazole?
- Cats may use Methimazole for different lengths of time. Please consult your veterinarian if you have any questions.
Who makes the Methimazole Transdermal Gel?
- The Methimazole Transdermal Gel is hand-made in our pharmacy.
- There is a minimum charge of $59.99.
- Shelf-life limits orders to an 80-day supply.

Great Thyroid medicine
From West Seneca nyComments about Methimazole Transdermal Gel (Compounded)This is the third cat we've needed the medicine for. Easy to use (just rub on the ear and what cat doesn't like to have his ears rubbed!) Definitely adds years to the cats life (and who doesn't want extra years with their compadres!) VetRx is a great company to work with, professional, quick and helpful. Would never get my pets meds anywhere else! -
Life Altering Medication
From UndisclosedComments about Methimazole Transdermal Gel (Compounded) 5mg/0.1mL, per 1mL SyringeMy sweet, elderly Sadie is a Torti, whose thyroid has gotten out of sync. Administering her medication orally was traumatizing, and I could see her spirit beginning to sync up fast. Being able to find a transdermal form that I can't afford has been life altering for both of us. THANK YOU from the bottom of our hearts!-
Thank you, VetRXDirect!

Less Stress is Best!
From UndisclosedComments about Methimazole Transdermal Gel (Compounded) 5mg/0.1mL, per 1mL SyringeRegi (21) was diagnosed with hyperthyroid four years ago. She is a feisty super senior kitty and giving her a pill twice a day was causing both of us stress. After switching to the transdermal gel, we're both more relaxed and her thyroid numbers are spot on! I can't recommend this enough.-
One happy cat.

Really! We have to do this twice a day by mouth?
From UndisclosedComments about Methimazole Transdermal Gel (Compounded) 10mg/0.1mL, per 1mL SyringeOur cat does not like to take medications by mouth. Giving her this medication twice a day was going to be a challenge! As a pharmacist, I looked for other options besides tablets. My internet search found VetRxDirect. The gel to treat her hyperthyroid condition was a blessing and has helped her maintain her weight and health. We have purchased this medication for almost three years and the quality of the gel is excellent and easy to apply.-

Hyper thyroid will not stop me thanks to my methamizole gel
From UndisclosedComments about Methimazole Transdermal Gel (Compounded) 5mg/0.1mL, per 1mL SyringeThe Methimazole transdermal cream helps with my hyper thyroid. This alternative medication is rubbed on my inner pinea twice daily. I am able to tolerate this medication better and give less of a fight when given in pill form. I would like this medication offered in 5mg/0.5 ml syringes instead of 5mg/0.1 syringes. This dose helps my mom give less gel cream to my ear but guarantees the same efficacy. Thank you VetRxDirect!-
I am unstoppable! I am Blanca.

Q & A

My cat has been prescribed this product 50mg/ml/#4 1. With the following instructions: Apply 0.05ml to inner ear every 12 hours. Which syringe meets these requirements? Thank you!?
-
A strength of 50mg/ml is equivalent to 5mg/0.1ml. A 5mg/0.1ml strength would contain 2.5mg of drug for every 0.05ml of gel. Each 1ml syringe would contain 20, 2.5mg doses when measured at 0.05ml. You would need to order 6 syringes to last 1 month when your dose is 0.05ml twice daily. Thank you, VetRxDirect

I would like to order the gel just to have available when I am gone for a caregiver who is not good administering oral medications. Normally how far out is the expiration date on the transdermal? Thank you.?
-
The beyond-use-date, or expiration date of methimazole transdermal gel is 90 days after compounding. Thank you, VetRxDirect

I need a 5mg/0.05ml dose which my cat currently receives in a gel pen. Can you compound this? How many doses are in each syringe??
-
We do compound this medication. It is available on our website as a 10mg/0.1mL transdermal gel - this would be the same strength if you continued to give 0.05mL. It comes in a 1 mL syringe and so there would be 20 doses in each syringe when administering 0.05ml. . Thank you, VetRxDirect

My vet has ordered 30G of the transdermal 2.5mg. If it is administered once a day how many doses is that? How many syringes are equivelant??
-
30 grams of medication equals 12,000 doses when administering 2.5mg doses. We can lawfully dispense up to 12 months worth of medication if the doctor prescribes that amount. With this medication being compounded at the pharmacy the expiration date of the medicine limits the dispensing amount to 80 days worth. So bottom line, if your pet was prescribed the 2.5mg per 0.1mL strength you can order up to 8mL (#8-1mL syringes) at a time. Please call VetRxDirect and ask to speak to a pharmacist if you have any further questions regarding the dispensing amount. Thank you.

Hello Doctor, My vet has prescribed trapazole transdermal 25ml with a twice daily dose of 0.1ml. I'd like to get 50ml with 0.05ml twice a day to save money. Can I buy 7vials? What's the expiration? Thanks a lot!!!?
-
That would work. The expiration of the medication is 90 days but we fill 80 days to allow for shipping time. Thank you, VetRxDirect

Once administered how quickly is this medication absorbed??
-
Absorption can be different for each animal that the medication is applied to due to the differences in the skin and hair around the ear. Methimazole transdermal gel is more commonly used in cats. Pet owners should always use a protective finger cot or rubber glove when administering methimazole transdermal gel to prevent absorption through the skin of the finger. The gel needs to be rubbed in thoroughly after application until no gel is visible. The inner ear does not need to be cleaned before the next application however, if there is any build up of dried medication or debris before the next dose, the inner ear can be cleaned. If there is concern for exposure of people or other animals to the medication, the inner ear may be cleaned and any residual gel may be removed after an hour as the majority of absorption should occur in this time. Alternate ears for each dose. When a cat is starting this medication, it can take 1 to 4 weeks to see the full effect of this medication. Thank you, VetRxDirect

Our prescription for our cat is for Methimazole (c) Lipoderm 25 mg/ml gel. I give the cat .1ml twice/day. Would I order the 2.5 syringe and how many would I need for a month's supply. Thank you.?
-
The 2.5mg/0.1ml strength would be equivalent to 25mg/ml, just written differently. The base used by VetRxDirect is a pluronic lecithin organogel, (PLO gel), which could be considered similar, but not the same as Lipoderm. The directions provided by the veterinarian will dictate the number of syringes needed for a 1 month supply. Each syringe contains a total of 1ml and if your required amount to be applied is 0.1ml twice daily, then you would need to order 6 syringes for a 1 month supply. Thank you, VetRxDirect
