What is the Methimazole Transdermal Gel for Cats?
- Methimazole is a prescription medication used to treat overactive thyroid glands in cats. While Methimazole can’t stop the condition, it will help your cat feel better and improve her quality of life.
- The active ingredient in each small, coated Felimazile tablet is methimazole, which reduces the amount of the thyroid hormone your cat’s thyroid gland produces.
- The medication used in the transdermal gel is the same as the tablets manufactured commercially but the difference is the delivery of the medication. Transdermal means across the skin.
- The transdermal gel is a thick gel containing methimazole which is applied to the hariless portion of the inner ear of your cat and is absorbed through the skin to the bloodstream.
- The gel will arrive in syringes marked for easy dosing and administration.
Why do cats use Methimazole?
- Cats may be prescribed Methimazole to treat overactive thyroid.
- Hyperthyroidism, or overactive thyroid, in cats causes weight loss, increased appetite, excessive thirst, hair loss, and more.
- While there is no permanent treatment for cats with hyperthyroidism, your veterinarian can help your cat feel better by regulating the thyroid with prescription Methimazole.
What else should I know about Methimazole?
- Manages symptoms of hyperthyroidism in cats.
- Flavored liquid may be easier to dose than tablets.
- Methimazole has a bitter taste. The transdermal gel allows easy dosing for cats that will not oral Methimazole.
- Looking for Felimazole tablets, Methimazole Generic Tablets, or Methimazole Liquid Suspensions?
What problems could my or cat have with Methimazole?
- Common side effects include vomiting, decreased appetite, and lethargy.
- Most side effects occur in the first 3 months of giving Methimazole and may be lessened by gradually increasing the dose. Always follow your veterinarian's directions.
How do you use Methimazole?
- Protective finger cots or examination gloves should be worn when applying this medication.
- Apply the transdermal gel to the hairless portion of the inner ear. Alternate ears receiving the medication.
- Pregnant women, women who may become pregnant, nursing mothers, and people with low thyroid levels should not handle Methimazole.
What is in Methimazole?
- Methimazole is an antithyroid agent that reduces the level of thyroid hormones in the body.
Will I get what I see in the picture?
- The Methimazole Transdermal Gel is a compounded medication. The ingredients will be mixed specially for your dog or cat in our pharmacy.
Is it important for my cat to finish all of the Methimazole?
- Cats may use Methimazole for different lengths of time. Please consult your veterinarian if you have any questions.
Who makes the Methimazole Transdermal Gel?
- The Methimazole Transdermal Gel is hand-made in our pharmacy.
- There is a minimum charge of $59.99.
- Shelf-life limits orders to an 80-day supply.

Great Thyroid medicine
From West Seneca nyComments about Methimazole Transdermal Gel (Compounded)This is the third cat we've needed the medicine for. Easy to use (just rub on the ear and what cat doesn't like to have his ears rubbed!) Definitely adds years to the cats life (and who doesn't want extra years with their compadres!) VetRx is a great company to work with, professional, quick and helpful. Would never get my pets meds anywhere else! -
Life Altering Medication
From UndisclosedComments about Methimazole Transdermal Gel (Compounded) 5mg/0.1mL, per 1mL SyringeMy sweet, elderly Sadie is a Torti, whose thyroid has gotten out of sync. Administering her medication orally was traumatizing, and I could see her spirit beginning to sync up fast. Being able to find a transdermal form that I can't afford has been life altering for both of us. THANK YOU from the bottom of our hearts!-
Thank you, VetRXDirect!

Less Stress is Best!
From UndisclosedComments about Methimazole Transdermal Gel (Compounded) 5mg/0.1mL, per 1mL SyringeRegi (21) was diagnosed with hyperthyroid four years ago. She is a feisty super senior kitty and giving her a pill twice a day was causing both of us stress. After switching to the transdermal gel, we're both more relaxed and her thyroid numbers are spot on! I can't recommend this enough.-
One happy cat.

Really! We have to do this twice a day by mouth?
From UndisclosedComments about Methimazole Transdermal Gel (Compounded) 10mg/0.1mL, per 1mL SyringeOur cat does not like to take medications by mouth. Giving her this medication twice a day was going to be a challenge! As a pharmacist, I looked for other options besides tablets. My internet search found VetRxDirect. The gel to treat her hyperthyroid condition was a blessing and has helped her maintain her weight and health. We have purchased this medication for almost three years and the quality of the gel is excellent and easy to apply.-

Hyper thyroid will not stop me thanks to my methamizole gel
From UndisclosedComments about Methimazole Transdermal Gel (Compounded) 5mg/0.1mL, per 1mL SyringeThe Methimazole transdermal cream helps with my hyper thyroid. This alternative medication is rubbed on my inner pinea twice daily. I am able to tolerate this medication better and give less of a fight when given in pill form. I would like this medication offered in 5mg/0.5 ml syringes instead of 5mg/0.1 syringes. This dose helps my mom give less gel cream to my ear but guarantees the same efficacy. Thank you VetRxDirect!-
I am unstoppable! I am Blanca.

Q & A

My cats RX is for Methizamole 50 mg/ml Gel. She gets a 0.1 dose alternating ears every 12 hours. Is an RX of Methimazole Topical Lipoderm 5MG/0.1ML Cream the same script? I didn't see 50 on your list and yet this is how my script for her comes. ?
-
Barbie, Methimazole 50mg/mL is the same strength as the Methimazole Topical Lipoderm 5mg/0.1mL cream indicated on your script. Lipoderm is a base that your veterinarian prescribed for the methimazole to be mixed in. VetRxDirect uses a similar but different base in the compounded product. Your cat's veterinarian would need to approve the use of VetRxDirect’s base in order for the prescription to be filled and shipped. Thank you, VetRxDirect

The label on the gel I am now using states that it is "100mg/ml Gel in Lipoderm." It contains 20 doses. What would be the equivalent to order??
-
If the methimazole transdermal gel that you are giving your pet is 100mg/mL and the dose you are giving is 5mg, then the equivalent strength in our syringes would be 10mg/0.1mL, and this syringe would also have 20 doses. Thank you, VetRxDirect

-

We currently order Methimazole 2.5mg/0.05ml T-A-D Transdrm Gel 1.5 ml. We currently get this through our vet but it is expensive and was told we could try getting online at a cheaper price. I did not see this dosage listed in your dropdown box??
-
It sounds like the equivalent strength that we compound would be the 5mg/0.1mL syringe. All of our syringes are 1mL, but that simply refers to the quantity of gel, and has no bearing on the strength of the medication. If you give 2.5mg doses (0.05mL), there would be twenty doses in one of our syringes. Thank you, VetRxDirect

My cat is diagnosed Methimaszole 5mg transdermal. The current vial is 2 turns. How many dosages would this product be? The one I have lasts about 2 weeks. It is a once a day dosage. Thank you?
-
caschaad61, The transdermal medications that VetRxDirect compounds is commonly stored in 1 mL syringes with 0.1 mL increments on the syringe for dosing. Contact your veterinarian or a VetRxDirect pharmacist for further assistance in converting your previous dosing instructions to what VetRxDirect supplies. Thank you, VetRxDirect

I am looking for Methimazole 10mg..5ml gel pen. My vet found the med for my cat but it is very expensive and she said I could try to find a cheaper place to buy it and i found your web site.. What does the second figure mean above (.5ml)??
-
Ruthie, Methimazole transdermal gel that we compound is sold per 1 milliliter syringe. The strengths listed indicate the strength of the gel per 0.1mL, so a 10mg/0.1mL syringe would be 10 milligrams in a tenth of the syringe. You would want to find out from your cat's veterinarian what dose your cat needs, and we would be able to help you figure out which syringe would be the appropriate strength and what the cost would be. Thank you, VetRxDirect

should it be kept in a fridge?

The transdermal gels that we compound do not require refrigeration. We recommend storing the syringes at room temperature away from direct light. Thank you, VetRxDirect

how many does are in a vial? My cats have started this med and are to get 1mm each day. By what my vet charged it will cost me $30 a month for both cats.?
-
Nancy, The number of doses in a syringe depends on the dose your cat is receiving and the strength of the medication ordered. Most transdermal gels are dosed in 0.1mL or 0.05mL per dose. For example, if your cat is prescribed 5mg of methimazole per dose, you could order the 5mg/0.1mL syringe and apply 0.1mL of gel each dose, or you could order the 10mg/0.1mL syringe and apply 0.05mL of gel each dose. If dosing at 0.1mL, there would be ten doses in a syringe. If you are applying it once a day, then there would be ten days worth of medication, if twice daily, then five days worth of medication. If dosing at 0.05mL, then there would be 20 doses in a syringe. If you are applying it once a day, then there would be twenty days worth of medication, if twice daily, then ten days worth of medication. Thank you, VetRxDirect
