What is PanaKare Plus for Dogs and Cats?
- PanaKare Plus is a prescription medication for dogs and cats with exocrine pancreatic insufficiency (EPI) or other digestive disorders.
- PanaKare Plus is a pancreatic enzyme concentrate made from pork that contains lipase, protease, amylase and is fortified with Vitamin A, Vitamin D3, and Vitamin E.
- PanaKare Plus Powder and PanaKare Plus Tablets offer flexible dosing options.
Why is PanaKare Plus used for dogs and cats?
- PanaKare Plus is prescribed to help relieve malnutrition and other symptoms caused when the pancreas does not produce enough digestive enzymes. This disorder is called exocrine pancreatic insifficiency (EPI).
- PanaKare Plus replaces pancreatic enzymes so your dog or cat can digest proteins, carbohydrates, and fats from food.
- PanaKare Plus Powder or PanaKare Plus Tablets may be prescribed depending on your pet’s preference or dosing needs.
What else should I know about PanaKare Plus?
- People with severe pork allergies should not handle this product.
- Store the PanaKare Plus Powder container tightly closed in a dry place at temperatures not exceeding 35°C (95°F).
- Store the PanaKare Plus Tablets container tightly closed in a dry place at controlled room temperature.
- Avoid inhaling powder as it may cause lung irritation or worsen asthma.
- Avoid contacting your skin with the powder. Wash any powder from your skin as soon as possible.
What problems could my dog or cat have with PanaKare Plus?
- Cats often do not like the taste of the pancreatic enzyme powder and may be more likely to take tablets or capsules. Some cats also may eat one brand of enzymes and not another. Talk to your veterinarian if you are having trouble with medicating your cat.
- Discontinue use in animals with symptoms of sensitivity. May cause oral mucosal irritation.
- PanaKare Plus side effects are usually not serious, but high doses of this medication may cause diarrhea, vomiting, excessive gas, and stomach cramping. Contact your veterinarian if these signs are severe, worsen, or continue to be a problem.
- PanaKare Plus side effects that may be serious or indicate a serious problem may include bleeding in the mouth, mouth and throat irritation, and esophageal ulcers. If using tablets or capsules, give food or water to your animal immediately after dosing. If using powder mixed into food, make sure the powder has been moistened before offering it to your animal.
How do you use PanaKare Plus?
- PanaKare Plus Powder is added to moistened food (canned or dry). Thorough mixing is necessary to bring the enzymes into close contact with the food particles. After mixing, let stand at room temperature for 15-20 minutes.
- PanaKare Plus Tablets are administered before each meal.
- Always follow your veterinarian's directions for use.
- If using tablets, make sure that your cat or dog gets water or food right after taking the tablets. This may reduce the risk of damage to the esophagus.

Medication helped my GSD with EPI
From Marshfield, WIComments about PanaKare Plus 425mg Tablets, 500ctMy GSD was recently diagnosed with Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency (EPI), after losing a significant amount of weight and having watery stool. A few days after starting PanaKare Plus, taken crushed with each meal, his stool has already improved. He takes the medication without reluctance, and has had no issues. I can't wait for him to gain some weight, and am thankful he is feeling better. -

Q & A
-
Is the pill big and can it be crushed? Currently my dog is on the powder, thanks?
-
These tablets are not substantially larger than average sized tablets. They can be crushed and are to be administered before a meal. Talk with your veterinarian about whether switching to the tablet form is a good option for your dog. Thank you, VetRxDirect

Hi My dog has exocrine pancreatic insufficiency (epi) will this work for him??
-
Yes, PanaKare Plus is used to provide pets with exocrine pancreatic insufficiency (epi) with the enzymes he or she needs to properly digest proteins, fats and sugars in their diet. The tablet form of PanaKare Plus should be administered before each meal. The powder form needs to be thoroughly mixed with each meal and allowed to stand at room temperature for 15 to 20 minutes prior to feeding. The correct dose of this medication should be determined by your veterinarian based on your pet’s weight and the severity of the condition. Thank you, VetRxDirect

My cat has EPI and is not eating the powder form well on its wet food. Is there a problem with using the tablet form. My vet seems hesitate to do this they seem to think it will it harm their stomach linings to have the pill form. Thank you?
-
Lucie, The tablet dosage form contains the same active ingredients as the powder: lipase, protease, amylase, and Vitamins A, D, and E. The manufacturer states that the tablets are not meant to be mixed with food. The results may differ with the tablet compared to the powder form. A veterinary reference book states that the powdered form of PanaKare Plus is preferred over the tablets but does not specifically state why. We advise that you further discuss this issue with your veterinarian to determine the best course of therapy for your cat. Thank you, VetRxDirect

CAN I ORDER THIS PRODUCT FOR MY DOG OR CAN MY VET HAVE THIS PRODUCT SENT TO MY HOME? HOW LONG SHOULD MY DOG TAKE THIS MEDICIATION.?
-
Michelle, PanaKare Plus is a prescription drug, so while you would place your pet's online order, we would need to obtain prescription authorization from your dog's veterinarian. This is usually completed by fax sent to the clinic, after your online order and as long as your pet has had a current examination. Since PanaKare Plus is a prescription drug, dose schedule, including duration, are best answered by your pet's veterinarian. Thank you, VetRxDirect
