What is Posatex Otic Suspension for Dogs and Cats?
- Posatex is a prescription ear medication for dogs or cats that treats otitis externa, outer ear infection, caused by yeast and bacteria.
- Posatex contains orbifloxacin, mometasone, and posaconazole - an antibiotoc, an anti-inflammatory steroid, and an antifungal.
- Posatex works by killing infection causing bacteria and yeast in the ear and reducing the swelling and redness often associated with ear infections.
Why is Posatex used for cats and dogs?
- If your dog or cat has been diagnosed with otitis externa or an ear infection, your veterinarian may prescribe a suspension such as Posatex.
- Posatex kills the yeast and bacteria causing the infection and has a steroid to treat swelling and redness.
What else should I know about Posatex?
- Posatex should be discontinued at least two weeks prior to allergy testing.
- Dispose of the Posatex according to local regulations. Do not pour it down the drain.
What problems could my dog or cat have with Posatex?
- Do not allow the suspension to get into your pet's eyes, nose, or mouth.
- Do not use in dogs with damaged ear drums.
- Your pet may experience some redness or discomfort at the application site.
- Contact your veterinarian immediately if you notice the infection is not healing or is getting worse.
- Contact your veterinarian immediately if you notice loss of appetite, vomiting, diarrhea, sudden hearing loss, increasingly worse ear pain, head tilt, walking in circles, mouth sores, increased thirst, frequent urination, or worsening skin and hair issues at the application site.
How do you use Posatex?
- Shake well before use.
- Prevent your dog or cat and other animals from licking or grooming the treated ears for at least 20 to 30 minutes after application.
- Wear gloves or wash your hands immediately after handling the medication.
What is in Posatex?
- Posatex combines three drugs.
- It contains the antibiotic orbifloxacin, the antifungal posaconazole, and the steroid mometasone furoate.
Will I get what I see in the picture?
- Posatex is a brand name. You will receive the exact brand that you request.
Is it important for my dog or cat to finish all of the Posatex?
- Posatex contains an antibiotic and an antifungal. Resistance is a major concern when using antibiotics and antifungals. To help avoid resistance, it is important for you to use this for as long as your veterinarian has prescribed, even if you dog or cat is looking and feeling better.
Who makes Posatex?
- Posatex is made by the manufacturer Merck.

Hearing loss
I've used this many times for my dog's ear infections, and they always respond well, and clear up quickly. However, this past time, my dog seems to have lost his hearing. After some research it seems that can be a side affect, which may or may not return. I feel terrible, and I know he must be scared and confused. Please be careful using this product.

Dangerous for Older Dogs
From Summerville, SCComments about Posatex Otic SuspensionMy vet gave us this to use in our dogs ears. She is 14 and it caused her to go completely deaf. I have reported this to both Merck and my vet and it seems there is little to nothing that can be done beside wait and hope. DANGEROUS PRODUCT! -

Best RELIEF for Dog's Ears!!
From UndisclosedComments about Posatex Otic Suspension 15g BottleThis is the BEST RELIEF I've found for my dog's ears! She has chronic ear infections, and her Vet loves the quick results we get with this med. After cleaning the ear, and then applying drops of this med, my dog gets almost immediate relief from the itch and swelling. Long lasting, & no smell, affordable too! My Vet & I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this product. -
Miracle ear medication.
From UndisclosedComments about Posatex Otic Suspension 15g BottleCole likes to swim. He's a beautiful English Lab, heavy boned, weighing in at 120 lbs. We take a 5 mile walk everyday through timber to the Racoon river, he fetches sticks I throw into the current, and brings them back to do all over again. Lately he was shaking his head side to side so I realized he had an ear infection from the river water, after using Posatex otic Suspension for one week he's back to normal, no more bad smell,or head shaking.-

Q & A

I'm using this product on my dog's ear infection. There is pus build-up and I'm worried that it won't work as well or as quickly as it should. Should I clean my dogs ears every day before I apply more??
-
Posatex Otic Suspension contains orbifloxacin, mometasone, and posaconazole. The orbifloxacin is an antibiotic agent present to combat infections caused by bacteria. The mometasone is a topical corticosteroid that is used to decrease inflammation caused by the infection. Finally, the posaconazole is a broad-spectrum antifungal agent which will help fight off infections caused by strains of yeast and fungi. The entirety of each drop should be administered into the ear canal in order for each component to reach its full effectiveness against the infection. The presence of pus around the ear canal may prevent this from occurring. It is also important to avoid contact with the dropper to the pus or the ear itself as this may cause bacteria to reside on the dropper and will prolong the infection through subsequent doses. Therefore, it is recommended that the dog's ear be cleaned prior to administration both to ensure the delivery of the full dose and to prevent reinfection. Thank you, VetRxDirect

Speak with your veterinarian regarding this issue. A proper diagnosis will be needed. Delaying treatment or attempting to treat with the wrong medication will lead to a worse outcome for your pet. Thank you, VetRxDirect

My Posatex for dogs expired on 3/14...is it still effective? (swimmers ear)?
-
The expiration date on a prescription medication is determined by the manufacturer. The usage of any drug product beyond the manufacturer determined expiration date is not advised. Contact your veterinarian to determine if your pet needs a new diagnosis to ensure proper treatment. A drug that is subpotent or not the correct antibiotic or antifungal to treat a current infection, will delay proper treatment and lead to a worse outcome for your dog. Thank you, VetRxDirect

My dogs vet has her on Posatex 15g once daily for 14 days, and after re-check is prescribing another 14 days. Is this O.K. ??
-
The manufacturer recommended treatment course for Posatex is 7 days. However, the dosage varies depending on the weight of your pet. Veterinarians may use the same product for an additional treatment course if the remaining bacteria and/or yeast present in the ear, have been determined to be susceptible to the drug(s) in the medication. However, a different medication is often prescribed when an antibiotic/antifungal medication has failed. Your pet may benefit from having further tests performed on his infected ear(s) to determine the bacteria and/or yeast causing the infection. Please consult your veterinarian.

Is this okay for cats? My cats have mites and the vet gave me posatex otic suspension for dog only reads on bottle?
-
You are correct that Posatex is indicated only for use in the ears of dogs. Posatex would likely not help with mites, as it is indicated only for outer ear infections caused by bacteria and fungus. We would recommend that you consult your cats' veterinarian again about the mites in your cats' ears so he or she can prescribe or recommend an appropriate treatment. Thank you, VetRxDirect

what happens if dog swallows some of this med. by accident??
-
Gerry, Posatex contains an antibiotic, antifungal, and a corticosteroid. Ingestion of the medication may cause an upset stomach as well as an increase in thirst, appetite, or frequency of urination. We advise that you contact the manufacturer Merck (800-521-5767) or your dog's veterinarian for further advice. Thank you, VetRxDirect

Do I need a prescription for this product? Where does it ship from??
-
Sandy, Yes, Posatex does require a prescription from the veterinarian. The easiest way for us to obtain a prescription from your pet's veterinarian is for them to fax a prescription to us. Once an order is placed, we send a request for the prescription via fax to the veterinarian that you listed when you checked out. Most clinics are willing to approve the fax and send it back to us if your pet is up-to-date on exams and bloodwork. Some clinics have policies in place that prevent them from answering faxed requests; if your clinic has a policy like this, they may choose to issue you a written prescription. Like your local human pharmacy, we can accept written prescriptions issued to you by the veterinarian, though we have to have the original so it needs to be mailed to us. Pharmacy law prevents us from accepting a copy (including a fax or scan) of a prescription that has been issued to you. We ship all orders from Coralville, Iowa, where we're located. Thank you, VetRxDirect
