What are Thyro-Tabs for Dogs and Cats?
- Thyro-Tabs are a prescription medication for dogs that contains the drug Levothyroxine Sodium.
- Levothyroxine is a replacement for the hormone T-4, which is naturally produced in the body by the thyroid gland to regulate metabolism and energy.
Why do cats and dogs use Thyro-Tabs?
- When the body is unable to produce enough thyroid hormone on it’s own because of an imbalance, an enlarged thyroid gland, or other medical conditions and treatments, it is called hypothyroidism.
- Hypothyroidism in dogs can be found with a blood test or by signs and symptoms involving metabolism, energy, nerve and muscle function, skin and haircoat.
- If your dog has been diagnosed with low thyroid hormone or hypothyroidism, your veterinarian may prescribe a Levothyroxine medication such as Thyro-Tabs.
What else should I know about Thyro-Tabs?
- Dogs taking Levothyroxine require much higher doses than humans. Doses for cats may be similar to doses for humans.
- Your veterinarian may need to perform regular blood tests to check the dose of Levothyroxine in the blood. These follow-ups are very important.
What problems could my dog or cat have with Thyro-Tabs?
- Side effects from giving too much Levothyroxine include fast heart rate, greater appetite with weight loss, thirst, increased urination, excitability, or nervousness. Dogs may pant more. Cats may appear withdrawn, apathetic, or uncaring. Contact your veterinarian if you notice any of these signs.
How do you use Thyro-Tabs?
- Thyro-Tabs can be given with or without food, but should be given in the same way every day to maintain a consistent level of Levothyroxine. Follow your veterinarian's directions.

Will I get what I see in the picture?

Excellent price!
My 13 year old miniature schnauzer has taken this medication twice a day for at least 2 years. He's a champ and doesn't complain because the pill is small and easy to swallow. The extra benefit is that the cost is 5 times less than what my vet charges for the same medication. This helps tremendously, especially having three dogs.

very slow process
This process with vetrxdirect is too slow. Days after paying and giving name and number of vet and sending scan of rx I was told that I still had to mail in the original. A week later I was told they didn't have it and then they "found it". The next day they said they would try to fill it in a day or 2. Almost a week later I received the medication. I ran out of medications and had to go back to the vet and pay more for a partial prescription. They were slow to tell you what all they really needed because if they told you it would take 10 to 14 days you'd probably just get it filled locally. Bait and switch technique.

My Plott Hound is allergic to dyes. Is there a synthroid dosage/product that is dye free??
-
Thyro-Tabs Canine contains levothyroxine sodium and is used for replacement therapy for diminished thyroid function in dogs (canine hypothyroidism). According to the manufacturer, Lloyd Inc, the 0.5mg strength tablet is the only one that is dye-free. It is recommended to consult with your veterinarian about the best dosage and formulation for your dog as they are most aware of your dog’s conditions and needs.

My 50lb border collie has just started taking .4mg per day, she has started having stomach issues (throwing up) and itching, should I stop the medication??
-
Side effects from Thyro-Tabs (levothyroxine) most often occur when the dose is too high. Dogs may experience a fast or racing heart rate, dermatitis, vomiting, diarrhea, increased appetite, thirst, and urination, as well as excitability, nervousness, and panting. Levothyroxine monitoring in dogs varies but is generally done 1 to 2 months after initiation of therapy or dose changes, or as needed based on clinical signs. Dose adjustments should be based on both clinical response and thyroid levels. Speak to your veterinarian prior to discontinuing or making dosing adjustments for Thyro-Tabs.

Please speak with your veterinarian about the dosage of the medication. The dose will be determined by your dog's thyroid lab levels; your veterinarian is the best source of information regarding the Thyro-Tabs dose.

My dog (mix breed lab/pit) is on 0.7 mg twice a day. He seems to be overemotional on any little noise, i.e. if TV volume is high, he begins with heart palpitation, nervousness, tremors...this is happening almost daily. Does his medication need re-adjustment??
-
According to Plumb’s Veterinary Drug Handbook, side effects are not common with levothyroxine. When they occur, it may mean the dose is too high. Side effects of levothyroxine that usually are not serious may include faster or racing heartbeat, greater appetite with weight loss, thirst and need to urinate, excitability or nervousness, and panting in dogs. Please contact your veterinarian if you notice any of these signs.

When the prescription says give to a dog on an empty stomach, how long do you need to wait before feeding??
-
Our veterinarian on staff suggests giving Thyro-Tabs Canine (levothyroxine) at least 30 minutes after feeding to ensure an empty stomach. Plumb’s Veterinary Drugs suggests that it is most important to give these tablets the same way every day, meaning at a similar amount of time before or after a meal or other medication every day. If you are not sure about when exactly would be the best time in your dog’s schedule, please consult with your veterinarian for his or her suggestions.

Is it possible that some dogs cannot tolerate thyro-tab at all??
-
Although levothyroxine is generally well tolerated at proper dosages, it is possible that adverse reactions may occur when dose is too high or too low. Sensitivities to inactive ingredients may also affect tolerability. Please consult your veterinarian to discuss further treatment for your dog if they are not tolerating the medication.

My dog was prescribed this and was to be given twice a day . Now she is pacing and panting more, are these known side affects of this medicine??
-
Thyro-Tabs Canine is a medication used as hormone replacement in dogs that do not produce enough thyroid hormone (T-4). Hyperactivity and increased rate of breathing are known to be possible side effects of the drug if the dose is too high. However this does not guarantee that the drug is the cause of these symptoms. If you are concerned or have further questions, please contact your veterinarian.
