What are Ursodiol Tablets and Capsules for Dogs and Cats?
- Ursodiol is a prescription medication that contains the naturally occurring bile acid, Ursodeoxycholic Acid.
- Ursodiol works by dissolving cholesterol, preventing cholesterol absorption in the intestines, and preventing the production of cholesterol in the liver. This decreases the formation of gallstones.
- Ursodiol also helps reduce excess levels of bile acids that may be harmful to the liver.
Why do cats and dogs use Ursodiol?
- Your veterinarian may prescribe Ursodiol if your pet has been diagnosed with cholesterol-containing gallstones, chronic liver disease, or a similar condition.
- Ursodiol may also be prescribed to help reduce inflammation associated with the gall bladder.
What else should I know about Ursodiol?
- Ursodiol should not be given to rabbits, guinea pigs, or rodents.
What problems could my dog or cat have with Ursodiol?
- One common, but not usually serious, side effect is diarrhea.
How do you use Ursodiol?
- Ursodiol works best when given with food. Follow your veterinarian's directions.
What is in Ursodiol?
- Ursodiol contains Ursodeoxycholic Acid, a naturally occuring bile acid.
- Ursodeoxycholic Acid dissolves cholesterol, prevents cholesterol absorption in the intestines, and prevents the production of cholesterol in the liver.
Will I get what I see in the picture?
- Ursodiol is sold as an FDA approved generic drug. Brand may vary from order to order and variation to variation. We are unable to guarantee which brand will be available at the time of order shipment.
Is it important for my dog or cat to finish all of the Ursodiol?
- Dogs and cats may use Ursodiol for different lengths of time. Please consult your veterinarian if you have any questions.

Great price for a great medicine.
From UndisclosedComments about Ursodiol (Generic) 250mg TabletMy vet recommended this product for my aging furbaby. He has just turned 14 and now has liver problems. This is actually the generic version but seems to be working great and is much more affordable than the name brand. So glad I found it here. This site was also the best value as well. -

Q & A

I have a cat with lymphoma of the intestines who is on Prednisone and Ursodiol for liver condition. He is now vomiting white bubbly mucous. Is this a reaction to both drugs??
-
Joe, Veterinary drug references indicate that ursodiol appears to be well tolerated in dogs and cats, with diarrhea listed as a potential side effect. Prednisone could cause increased thirst, increased appetite, increased urination, vomiting, diarrhea and behavioral changes as common listed side effects in your pet. The combination of ursodiol and prednisone is not a listed drug interaction, meaning administration together appears to be okay. It is not recommended to discontinue prednisone therapy abruptly without consulting your pet's veterinarian. Your veterinarian should also be informed if this side effect continues or becomes worse. Thank you, VetRxDirect

My cat presently takes 1/4 tablet of 250mg of Ursodiol. Can this pill be cut with a pill cutter or is it in a casing??
-
Jill, The Ursodiol 250mg tablet is not scored and it is film coated. The manufacturer also makes a 500mg tablet which is film coated and scored, so theoretically it is possible to split pills. We tried quartering the tablets with our pill splitter and found out that while it was possible, there is a high chance of variable sizes (doses) of the 'quarters' and we doubt success with every cut. Have you or your cat's veterinarian considered compounded capsules of Ursodiol? We have a 60mg capsule available. Hope this information is helpful, VetRxDirect
