What are Vetmedin Chewable Tablets for Dogs and Cats?
- Vetmedin is a prescription medication used to treat congestive heart failure in dogs and certain cardiovascular conditions in cats.
- Vetmedin-CA1 is prescribed to delay the progression of myxomatous mitral valve disease (MMVD) to congestive heart failure in dogs.
- Vetmedin contains pimobendan, which helps the heart contract (pump) more effectively, and it dilates blood vessels, which reduces the amount of pressure the heart needs to pump blood.
Why is Vetmedin used for Dogs and Cats?
- Vetmedin is labeled for the treatment of congestive heart failure in dogs caused by either a bad heart valve (myxomatous mitral valve disease) or a weak heart muscle (dilated cardiomyopathy).
- Vetmedin may be prescribed for extra-label use in cats with dilated cardiomyopathy or other medical conditions as a veterinarian determines.
- Vetmedin may also be prescribed in combination with other medications for congestive heart failure treatment.
- Vetmedin-CA1 is labeled for the delay of onset of congestive heart failure in dogs with Stage B2 preclinical myxomatous mitral valve disease (MMVD).
What else should I know about Vetmedin and Vetmedin CA-1?
- Vetmedin chewable tablets are scored for easy dosing.
- Please note that due to short supply from the manufacturer, at this time we can only fill one bottle of Vetmedin per pet per order. VetRxDirect understands how important this medication is, and we sincerely appreciate your assistance in helping as many pets as possible.
What problems could my dog or cat have with Vetmedin and Vetmedin CA-1?
- The most common Vetmedin side effects are gastrointestinal effects including poor appetite and diarrhea.
- Contact your veterinarian if you see any new or worsening symptoms while giving Vetmedin.
- Vetmedin is not labeled for certain heart conditions. Your veterinarian will determine if your animal has these conditions before using pimobendan.
How do you use Vetmedin?
- Vetmedin works best when given on an empty stomach. Follow your veterinarian's directions.
- Do not stop giving Vetmedin without talking to your veterinarian.
- Vetmedin dosage will vary based on the type and severity of the condition it is prescribed for.
What is in Vetmedin?
- Vetmedin contains pimobendan.
- Pimobendan is an inodilator that improves the heart's action by making the heart muscle pump harder while relaxing blood vessels to allow the blood to flow more easily.
Will I get what I see in the picture?
- Vetmedin and Vetmedin CA-1 are both brand names. You will receive the exact brand that you request.
Who makes Vetmedin?
- Vetmedin is manufactured by Boehringer Ingelheim.

Seems to be helping my 16 year old Pomchi.
From UndisclosedComments about Vetmedin (pimobendan) Chewable Tablets 2.5mg, 50 Tablet BottleMocha, our 16 year old Pomchi, is being treated with this for congestive heart failure. She takes half a tablet twice a day. It is a chewable tablet which is helpful. It does not have a strong smell and is easily hidden in a soft moist treat and easily chewed so she does not seem aware that it is hidden. She is doing well and I believe it is helping her.-

Q & A

My dog is prescribed 2.5mg 3 times/day. That's 90 pills a month. Why do you limit customers to 1 bottle of 50/month when you can see the prescription and know that's not enough for a month? Is there any exceptions to your restrictions??
-
Vetmedin (pimobendan) is currently distributed to pharmacies and veterinary clinics via an allocation system. We limit customers to 1 bottle of 50 tablets per month so that the product is available to as many pets as possible. For further information specific to the allocation, please contact our pharmacy staff via email at [email protected]. For some time you have been out of stock for Vetmedin .5 mg. Any idea when it will be back in stock? Thanks.?

My cat takes 2.5 mg twice a day. Are the 10mg able to be split into quarters easily??
-
Vetmedin chewable tablets are scored so they can be split in half easily. It may be more challenging to split the tablets again into quarters (due to tablet crumbling), however, it is okay to do split into quarters as it does not alter medication effectiveness. Vetmedin does come in 2.5mg chewable tablets as well, which might be easier to use. Please contact your cat's vet as they may have additional recommendations on which strength would be best for your cat.

Hello. Vet is prescribing 1.25mg dose for my dog. Are the 5mg tablets easily broken into 4 doses? From the picture looks like the tablet only has one score line but with a pill cutter would a second split be feasible? Or is the 2.5mg tablet (divided) easier to manage? Thank you in advance for advice.?
-
Vetmedin comes in oblong shaped, half-scored chewable tablets. It may be difficult to split these tablets properly into fourths due to their shape and they may crumble when split more than half, even with a pill cutter. The 2.5 mg tablet is scored, and would be easier than splitting into fourths.

can i buy the 5mg and easily split into 4ths??
-
Vetmedin comes in oblong shaped, half-scored chewable tablets. It may be difficult to split these tablets properly into fourths due to their shape and they may crumble when split more than half. If your veterinarian prescribes ¼ tablets, we recommend having your vet clinic showing you how to split tablets, or your clinic splitting them for you. Vetmedin is also available in 1.25 mg tablets, which are equivalent to a ¼ tablet of the 5mg strength.

Can this be given to a cat??
-
Vetmedin is not currently labeled for use in cats. However, some case reports have shown successful use in cats. The correct dosing is unknown and is currently based upon dosages given to dogs. Vetmedin is contraindicated in hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, which is a heart disease common in cats. The use of this medication in cats would be left to the veterinarian's discretion.

I am giving this medication to a small (14lb) dog. I am having a hard time getting her to take it even though it is supposed to be chewable. I have tried crushing it up in food, or wrapping it in everything I can think of. She will smell it, eat the meat or whatever and spit the pill out. Does it come in liquid form??
-
Unfortunately, Vetmedin is only available through VetRxDirect in the form of chewable tablets. An option that is available to you through VetRxDirect is purchasing Pill Pockets. This product is designed to mask the flavor and smell of medications to ease the administration of them to your pet. They come in a variety of flavors and have a small hole where you are able to insert the medication. It is recommended to break the medication into smaller pieces to further avoid detection by your pet. Please see "pill pockets" on the VetRxDirect website for further information, pricing, and reviews. Thank you, VetRxDirect

I give my 13 pound dog this med. He refuses to eat it and can smell it in food so he flat will not take it. So, what I learned to do is mix 2 level tablespoons of non-fat powdered milk in a 1/2 pint jar of water, add a teaspoon honey and mix. Next, pour 2 tablespoons of the mix in a shallow dish, crush the pill really fine and stir it in the milk mixture. My dog LOVES it! And, you have enough mixture to last several days. Keep in the fridge. If he wants it warm, put the milk in the microwave 5 seconds BEFORE adding the ground up pill. Best of luck. God bless.

My Yorkie would probably never chew up a tablet. Instead, I hold her on my lap, talk to her, tell her to open her mouth (which she does), and I put the piece of tablet in the very back of her mouth (throat), and I rub my fingers down the outside of her throat area to help her swallow it...and down it goes. Once in a while it doesn't go down, but I just do the process again. So far, that's worked well for me. Good luck. Pills are hard to give to our fur babies.

My 1.25 Vetmedin was imprinted with P05 this time, is this just different because the P01 stamped ones are manufactured in Canada??
-
Per the manufacturer, Boehringer Ingelheim Vetmedica, Inc., Vetmedin 1.25mg, 5mg, and 10mg tablets all have 2 different sites in which they are manufactured. Therefore, there are 2 different embossment codes upon each tablet, depending on which location it was manufactured at. The 2.5mg Vetmedin tablets are only manufactured at 1 location and therefore only have 1 embossment code. The embossment codes on the tablets are as follows: Vetmedin 1.25mg tablets: P01 --OR-- P05 Vetmedin 2.5mg tablets: P06 Vetmedin 5mg tablets: P03 --OR-- P07 Vetmedin 10mg tablets: P04 --OR-- P08 Thank you, VetRxDirect

My dog weighs nine pounds what size of heart murmur medication is right??
-
The dosing recommendations for Vetmedin are 0.5 mg/kg daily in two divided doses according to our resources. Following these guidelines, an expected dose would be approximately one-half to one 1.25mg tablet twice daily. However, these guidelines do not replace the recommendations from your veterinarian. See your veterinarian for dosing Vetmedin in your dog. Thank you, VetRxDirect
