My vet prescribed Chloramphenicol 1g tablets for my dog's urinary infection. We were warned to use rubber gloves when handling this medication since she says it can be fatal to some humans. Your website has no such warnings about this medication. What is the difference??

My dog has stopped eating after taking this drug for 3 days of the recommended dosage. Why is this happening and should I discontinue the usage? I will be contacting the vet doctor at Purdue University tomorrow, but it is Saturday and I will have to do this by phone as I live 2 hours away from the Small Animal Hospital. If I cannot contact them, what should I do over the next 2 days of the weekend? Thank you!?

Vet recommended this medication for my 13yr old Poodle/Terrier.She has had skin issues for years, most were treatable(yeast),but when she contacted a staph infection (not sure how) they put her on this. After 3 days of giving her this medication (3x a day) she started vomiting and then refused to eat at all.She is a seizure dog and takes phenobarbital 2x a day, which I could't give either if she won't eat.Vet gave her an anti-nausea injection,RX food andsent her home. She is finally starting to eat little bits and no vomiting after 3 days of no eating. The infection looks much better, just blackness on the skin where the infection was. The Vet says she must finish the medication to make sure the infection is all gone. Anyone else had a problem with their pet vomiting, how did you handle it? I'm afraid to put her back on this medication in fear the vomiting will start again. When I attempt to feed her,she sits and shakes,as if she's afraid to eat! Any help/suggestions appreciated! Thank You?

This medication is a powerful antibiotic that has been associated with stomach upset including vomiting. This medication has a bitter taste and is best administered with food. Administering this medication with food may also decrease the side effects. If your dog vomits shortly after taking the medication, the medication may not be fully absorbed and the infection may not be adequately treated. There may be other antibiotics that will still treat the infection but would be more tolerable for your dog, consult your veterinarian to go over your options. Thank you, VetRxDirect

Hi, just a quick question. Does the Viceton (Chloramphenicol) tablet contain only chloramphenicol, or does it contain other ingredients as well??
-
Chloramphenicol, brand name Viceton, as manufactured by Bimeda, Inc. and packaged by Osborn, does contain other ingredients. These ingredients are inactive pharmaceutically and are commonly referred to as excipients. Excipients help in the tablet manufacturing process and can also help with absorption of the active ingredient or pharmaceutical in the body. The excipients contained in Viceton tablets (all sizes) include starch, dextrose, cellulose, and magnesium stearate. These excipients are commonly used in tablets and are generally regarded as safe. However, side-effects or sensitivities, although rare, may still occur. If you have any concerns about administering this drug to your pet, or about any of the excipients, we encourage you to speak with your pet’s veterinarian. Thank you, VetRxDirect
