Good product for my elderly dog
My elderly dog has mild kidney dysfunction and this medication alleviates her symptoms of excessive thirst and frequent urination. It's expensive and needs to be kept refrigerated. Buying it online through Vet RX is much more economical than buying it at the Vet's. I was concerned about shipping something that needs to be kept cold. Vet RX did an excellent job and I bought 90 days worth at a time and will continue to do so as long as needed.

Would not recommend
I recommend not buying this product. The capsule is to big for a cat. It is highly recommended not breaking the capsule open and putting on your cats food. This medication needs to be ingested whole.
I tried putting this capsule in a pill pocket, which did not work. My cat broke the capsule open in her mouth. Maybe 45 minutes to an hour later, my cat was walking and completely lost her balance and just fell on her side 2 different times. My cat became very fatigued and unresponsive.
I tried every way with giving my cat this capsule, and all were unsuccessful. The only part that concerns is the above statement with my cat becoming fatigued, unresponsive, and just falling over 2 different times. I saw in my cats eye she was not good. I cannot and will not use this product.
I am disappointed in the fact that nothing is described as possible side effects. If those were stated, I would not have purchased or tried this product.

This medication is essential to treating kidney failure.
From UndisclosedComments about Azodyl Small Capsules, 90 ctI chose this product because my little 13 year old chihuahua was diagnosed with kidney failure. Azodyl helps remove toxins from the kidneys. So along with Chinese herbs, fresh diet, and fluid therapy, Azodyl has helped him to regain his energy and appetite.-

This medication helped my cat
From UndisclosedComments about Azodyl Small Capsules, 90 ctMy cat was diagnosed kidney disease two years ago. He is turning 17 years on next Jan and this products was the first supplement that was recommended by his vet when my cat was diagnosed kidney disease. He's been taking Azodyl for two years now and his kidney values are pretty stable and similar to the values from two years ago. I think Azodyl is helping to maintain his kidney values stable. -

Kidney function improved.
From UndisclosedComments about Azodyl Small Capsules, 90 ctAfter reading the other reviews I thought Azodyl was worth a try. My 15 year old miniature schnauzer's kidney function had declined greatly when I had her checked at the vet. She'd been much more lethargic, wouldn't eat and was vomiting when she did eat. Her vet said I could try Azodyl although she wasn't sure it would help. When I took her back last week for labs about a month after starting it, she'd regained a little weight and her labs were greatly improved. Her vet was amazed at the huge improvement (as was I) and really had no explanation for it except that she was better hydrated now. She said she's going to research it a bit more and may consider giving it to her dog who has some decreased kidney function. My dog still has some off days, but overall she's back to her energetic self and eating much better. Definitely worth a try if your dog has decreased kidney function.-

Q & A

I was just hoping you could ease my concerns. Azodyl came overnight, but I didn't refrigerate it until five hours later. It remained in the cooler/package in the hallway. It might've of been 70 degrees outside. Do you know if it is still 100% effective or if it was affected? Thank you?
-
According to the manufacturer Azodyl can remain at room temperature for up to 2 weeks, with no effect on the expiration date. The circumstances that you have described, the product integrity would not be compromised. .

Does Azodyl need to be given one hour prior to eating? Can it be given with a small amount of liverwurst? My dog will take capsules as long as it is wrapped in liverwurst or cheese. Thanks Mike?
-
The manufacturer states that Azodyl capsules should be administered whole and not opened or crushed and to administer at least one hour before the main meal. Wrapping the capsule in a pill wrap or with just enough food to administer would be acceptable as long as it is separated from the main meal by an hour.

Please post a photo of the "small capsule" next to a ruler. No need to purchase if product is too large for my dog to swallow.?
-
They're quite small, no larger than a regular sized dog kibble. My cat can swallow them easily. Sorry, no time to take a photo (and I don't even own a ruler!) but if you read the questions above yours in one answer you'll find dimensions.

When I received my Azodyl, the ice pack was melty and watery. I'm worried that the product is not going to be fully effective. Is it still okay??
-
If the Azodyl was still cool (not necessarily cold) when you received it, there should not be any issues with the product's effectiveness. It only needs to be put into the refrigerator after you take it out of the shipping package. According to the manufacturer, it is still effective until the product reaches temperatures in the mid-80s Fahrenheit.

The manufacturer says not to open the capsule but a lot of reviewers open the capsule and sprinkle it on food. Is this ok? Why can the capsule not be opened??
-
Azodyl capsules have an acid resistant coating to prevent them from being broken down in the stomach and absorbed in the intestines. The manufacturer recommends the capsules should be administered whole to maintain the efficacy of the supplement, and not opened or crushed.
Verified Answer -
I could not pill my cat without traumatizing her and she wouldn't take the capsule when hidden in a small amt of soft food. My vet said it would be ok to open the capsule and sprinkle it on my cat's soft food. This has been working for my cat for 9 months and has helped her symptoms significantly. I notice her symptoms increase when we skip a dose so I know the sprinkle approach is helping her.
Community Answer -
It sounds like it's not going to harm your pet to open the capsules etc but it probably won't help them, either. This is because the prebiotics need to be protected in the stomach (by the capsule) because stomach acid damages or destroys them before they reach the intestines (which is where they help). In other words, the product won't work properly (or maybe at all) if not administered in it's protective capsule.
