A GOOD RELIABLE WELL-PROVEN ANTIHISTAMINE
From undisclosedComments about Chlorpheniramine (OTC)We have used this 12-hour extended release antihistamine (AH) for years. There are lots of new - and very expensive - AH types on the market, but this is a well proven form dating back decades. It is well-tolerated by our critters, and does as good a job as the big-buck ones, IMHO. The delivered dose is only one mgm per hour, so it can be given to quite small animals, say 10 lbs and up. We live in a high-pollen area, and the barn is pretty old, and hard to really knock out all the threads of old moldy hay. In addition to reducing sneezing and wheezing, it can mitigate itching from skin problems as well, making healing easier with less scratching. A good old standby. The human form costs about 3 or 4 times as much at the pharmacy. -

My vet prescribed this for Mast Cell Cancer in my 55 pound dog, but the directions are vague- 4 to 8 mg 2 to 3 times a day. Any more specific protocol suggestions for this use??

I have a tabby that is overweight, aprrox. 7 yrs. The vet charged me over 300 plus a script for 20 pills of Chlorpheniramine, Any suggestions? My cat throws up the pills, Do you have a liquid form/suggestions??

Chlorpheniramine, which is commonly used in cats to prevent allergic reactions and to treat pruritus (itchiness), is available as 4mg and 8mg tablets, 2mg chewable tablets, and a 2mg/5ml syrup (Aller-ChlorⓇ, OTC) and 4mg/5ml suspension (Pediox-SⓇ, Rx only). To have the formulation of the product changed, you should first speak with your cat’s veterinarian, he or she will need to write a new prescription or will recommend an available over-the-counter product which may be less expensive. Depending on the dose prescribed, you can also speak with your pet’s veterinarian about the possibility of splitting tablets (that are not extended release) to obtain the appropriate dose.
