Q & A
-
1.) Can I put the Epakitin into capsules and give that way? Will it absorb correctly? 2.) I puree my dog's food in the morning and it sits all day. Can Epakitin be added when I make the daily food? Is it safe if my healthy dogs eat a small amount??
-
We contacted the manufacturer regarding the placement of Epakitin into capsules and they do not recommend this. Also, due to the size of a typical Epakitin dose, this would require you to administer numerous capsules to your pet multiple times per day. Many pet owners find it difficult to administer capsules to their pets which is why we feel it would be best given with your pet’s food. Most likely there is no concern for the healthy pet(s) to ingest a small amount. However, we recommend giving the supplement only to the pet(s) needing kidney support. Please contact your veterinarian regarding the use of this supplement with any other medications that your pet may be taking. Thank you, VetRxDirect

Above, (Sheea) You say 1 level scoop is 1 gram, and you say to Mary Ann that 1 scoop is 2.5 gram, What is the correct answer. The product came without any direstions??????

Anonymous, You ask a very important question. We hope to clarify the issue here. The 60g and 180g tubs provide scoops where one level spoonful contains 1 gram of Epakitin. The 300g tub provides a scoop where one level spoonful contains 2.5 grams of Epakitin. The larger scoop in the 300g tub is provided to reduce the total number of spoonfuls a pet parent would give as a dose. All three tubs state to administrate 1g/5kg of body weight given by mouth in the morning and evening with food. It's best to ask your pet's veterinarian for the proper dose and number of spoonfuls to give your pet. Please make sure to look at the size of tub or scoop before giving this product to confirm the size of a spoonful. We'll update the product pictures above to help distinguish between scoop sizes. Thank you so much for asking this important question, VetRxDirect

My 15 year old cat has megacolon for which he takes cisapride and lactulose. He was recently started on epaktin--is there a worry about drug interaction? And most importantly, will it cause constipation? Thank you!?
-
Chelonia, One component of Epakitin is calcium carbonate; which could possibly interact with lactulose and cause constipation. Because your cat is already receiving cisapride and lactulose it is not likely that your cat would become constipated as a result of adding Epakitin. Separating the lactulose and Epakitin by at least 2 hours would reduce the chance of interaction. It is recommended that you talk to your veterinarian regarding the supplement as well as if signs and symptoms of constipation worsen. Thank you, VetRxDirect
