What is Levemir Insulin for Dogs and Cats?
- Insulin is a hormone that is naturally produced by the pancreas to convert sugar (glucose) in the blood to energy for the body.
- Insulin therapy is prescribed to dogs and cats with diabetes. Diabetic animals are either unable to produce their own insulin or cannot use it properly.
- Insulin helps treat diabetes in cats and dogs by normalizing the glucose level in the blood.
- The insulin in Levemir is Insulin Detemir, a U-100, long-acting insulin. U-100 means that each milliliter of insulin is divided into 100 dosing units.

How do you use Levemir?

We recently moved out of the area & the new veterinarian doesn't prescribe Levemir. After multiple attempts to get it thru the local pharmacy without success, I called our previous vet. Levemir worked where Vetsulin didn't
From UndisclosedComments about Levemir (insulin detemir injection) FlexPen, 100units/mL, per 3mL PenThis worked when Vetsulin didn't. I wish it wasn't twice as expensive as Vetsulin though. The FlexTouch pen is nice as long as you don't have someone who pushes the button and twists the bottom a bunch to pressurize it, because when you remove the needle the pressure will cause the insulin to spill out until the membrane closes the hole. For users new to this type of insulin, my dog's blood glucose waivered about 80 points for the first 7 days, once we finally got to the appropriate amount. But since has stabilized to about a 30 point waiver between days. -

Are there different needles. Does the insulin need to be refrigerated??

Levemir is available as a 10 mL multi-use vial and a 3 mL prefilled pen (FlexTouch). Pen needles and syringes are available in various needle lengths and gauges and are sold separately. When instructed to draw up Levemir using an insulin syringe, always use a U-100 syringe. Prior to first use, unopened vials and FlexTouch pens should be stored in the refrigerator. Once opened, vials may be refrigerated or stored at room temperature. After first use, FlexTouch pens should be stored at room temperature. It is advised to discard both products 42 days after first use. Please consult your veterinarian to determine which products are most appropriate for your pet.

My cat needs 1 unit of levimir 2x a day . So if I buy the flex pen I'd have to throw it out in 42 days? I'd be wasting medication and money.?

We just got a vetPen by myerck to try on our diabetic dog. Does yours work the same in that you have to puncture the dog and hold the Pen in for what seems like forever for the dose to be given?? We were hoping you find one that you sort of press and release.....this one is actually making the injections worse.?

According to the manufacturer, the levemir insulin pen is to be held until the counter reaches zero and then count down from 6 to avoid leakage. Many of the other available insulin pens also have similar procedures. For further questions on what insulin option may be best for your dog you should contact your veterinarian.

I have been giving my dog 7 units twice a day for a year now and she is fighting me about it. I give it to her in the top neck area. Is there another place to give her the shot and would one of these pens be easier on her??

The back of the neck is the best place to give an insulin shot. You could also give it on the side of your dog's body above the front legs. The pens use the same length of needle as the syringes - the main difference is how you as an owner measure out the dose before administration. Please contact your veterinarian to determine the best place to give your dog insulin and whether the pen would be a better choice.
