What are Methimazole Tablets for Cats?
- Methimazole is a prescription medication used to treat overactive thyroid glands in cats. While Methimazole can’t stop the condition, it will help your cat feel better and improve her quality of life.
- The active ingredient in each small, coated Felimazile table is methimazole, which reduces the amount of the thyroid hormone your cat’s thyroid gland produces.
Why do cats use Methimazole?
- Cats may be prescribed Methimazole to treat overactive thyroid.
- Hyperthyroidism, or overactive thyroid, in cats causes weight loss, increased appetite, excessive thirst, hair loss, and more.
- While there is no permanent treatment for cats with hyperthyroidism, your veterinarian can help your cat feel better by regulating the thyroid with prescription Methimazole.
What else should I know about Methimazole?
- Manages symptoms of hyperthyroidism in cats.
- Small tablets for easy dosing. Tablets are not coated.
- Methimazole has a bitter taste.

- Most side effects occur in the first 3 months of giving Methimazole and may be lessened by gradually increasing the dose. Always follow your veterinarian's directions.
How do you use Methimazole?
- Wear gloves when handling Methimazole.
- Pregnant women, women who may become pregnant, nursing mothers, and people with low thyroid levels should not handle Methimazole.
What is in Methimazole?
- Methimazole is an antithyroid agent that reduces the level of thyroid hormones in the body.
Will I get what I see in the picture?
- Methimazole is sold as an FDA approved generic drug. Brand may vary from order to order and variation to variation. We are unable to guarantee which brand will be available at the time of order shipment.
Is it important for my cat to finish all of the Methimazole?

Cats take this easily - dissolves better than the coated tab
I got a written prescription and ordered online from VetRXDirect for a cheaper price..... the pills I received had no coating. I tried dissolving them in a little tuna juice and the cats drank it and the pills dissolved completely! YEA. It has been over a year now and both cats are healthy again, went from skeletons to healthy. ONE VERY HELPFUL tip I found online on the pill makers site is that there is a much higher success rate with this thyroid medication if you give it TWICE a day. And it is definitely TRUE if you can possibly manage it. My cats improved fast once I started this pill cutting the dose in half so I could give it twice a day. Otherwise they hyper kicks in again and your cat is not getting the full benefit. My vet said it did not matter but it certainly does.
I alternate chicken juice (canned chicken) and tuna juice. And it doesn't take but a tablespoon per dose. I am so thankful my cats still take their medication like a treat! because I originally got the small coated pills from the vet and my cats would not take them and they did not dissolve.
I have several adult rescued cats. 2 of my older ones got skinny very fast and I was sure they had cancer because they were old and it happened fast. I took them in and both had hyperthyroid.
I got the coated pills from the vet and they were expensive and i could not get the cats to take them. I tried hiding the pills in food but within a few days both cats refused. And the coated pills will NOT dissolve fully.
I had to resort to forcing the pills into them. ---

The service I get from Vetrxdirect has always been good. However, this time the generic drug, which I have used for my cat for many years, must have come from a different manufacturer and while the pills are scored, they are so thick and the score line is so shallow that I have to use a pill cutter to cut them in half. I used to always be able to break them, which is much more convenient. I'm sure this is an easy fix by the manufacturer if someone would just point it out to them, so I hope Vetrxdirect will do that.

Timiliness and accuracy
From Georgetown MEComments about Methimazole (Generic)For each of the prescriptions, they have been received in a timely and accurate manner. This is critical because of the process of having to get a prescription from the doctor. They are hesitant to put too many refills on it which is not your concern. The comparison in cost of purchasing the same medication from our vet is large. We appreciate the savings. I wish we could get a longer dosage period, 3 months vs the one or two months from the vet. Looking forward to continuing business with you. Our cat also enjoys the treats you have included with the product. -
Pretty good
From Fort Lauderdale, FL, USAComments about Methimazole (Generic)Hi. I bought these pills for less than half price when compared to the Vet's pills. They work as good as the Vet's ones... The only difference that I could find is that they are harder to cut in half. It can be a little messy. It would be awesome if it could be improved. Thank you. -

Q & A

Some responses to crushing cat thyroid tablets say "Do not crush." While other responses to administering crushed thyroid meds don't make any comment at all. Therefore it is confusing to me. If I could crush pill and mix with tuna juice I think Snooky would lap up the med, but now I'm concerned because of conflicting info. Help, please.?
-
Generic methimazole tablets can be crushed and mixed with food and immediately administered if directed by a veterinarian. It is important to make sure your cat eats everything in the bowl with the drug mixed in. Otherwise, the cat might not get the full dose. It is recommended to handle generic methimazole wearing gloves to reduce human exposure. There is also a brand name methimazole medication called Felimazole. The manufacturer does not recommend crushing the Felimazole tablets, because they are sugar coated to cover up the bitter taste and reduce human contact with the active ingredient methimazole.

What is the difference between Methimazole and Felimazole besides cost??
-
Felimazole is also a sugar coated tablet, whereas the human preparation of methimazole does not have a sugar coating. From the package insert, it appears that Felimazole is sugar-coated both to improve taste for the cat as well as to increase the safety of the drug (the coating helps prevent human exposure to methimazole). Felimazole package insert available at: http://www.dechra-us.com/products/cat/felimazole

How fresh are these pills, i.e., how long until they expire on average? Thanks!?
-
Expiration dates vary based on the manufacturer and the order date. A VetRxDirect pharmacist ensures that prescriptions are only filled with medications that have a proper expiration date, and that the medication can be used well within the expiration date. The expiration date will also be printed on the label on the outside of your pet's medication bottle.
