The Only Method That Would Potentially Save My Grandkitty
From UndisclosedComments about Methimazole Suspension (Compounded) (Chicken) 5mg/ml, 60mlI picked Vet RX Direct because they could compound my grandkitty's hyperthyroidism medication into a flavored liquid. My girl is virtually impossible to sneak something by-- she can smell hidden medicine from 3 ft. away! So, I hide the liquid medicine in sardine water with just a bite of sardines and she's taking it! Thank you, Vet RX -- I wouldn't have been able to treat her at all without your help!!! :-)-

Great product, works well!
From Knoxville TNComments about Methimazole Suspension (Compounded)Cleo easily takes this medicine with no trouble at all. I have tried both flavored and unflavored, and the unflavored works best when mixed with some wet food or baby food. This product works as Cleo's thyroid has stabilized. -

Medicine is easy to give to my cat!
From UndisclosedComments about Methimazole Suspension (Compounded) (Fish) 10mg/ml, 60mlThis medicine has made a huge difference in my cat's quality of life since her diagnosis of Hyperthyroidism a few years ago. I just add the liquid on top of her wet food 2x/day and she doesn't even notice it. The best part is I don't have to struggle with giving her pills or putting a cream in her ears.-
Happy Lily!

Q & A

My cat started treatment with Methimazole liquid two weeks ago. As an option the vet discussed the use of a gel applied in the inner side of the ear. She said I would need to use gloves for my protection so I did not absorb the medication. When giving my cat the medication she struggles and I find that I get sprayed with the liquid. I just realized that this week, so I have started to wash my handa afterward. My question is: should I be using gloves when giving my cat the liquid, also??
-
Oral and topical formulations are absorbed differently by the body. Gloves should always be worn as a safety precaution. Please contact your local physician or your cat's veterinarian for more information about thyroid function and absorption in the body.

For a cat that requires a 5 mg pill twice per day, how much of the suspension product would be administered with each dose??
-
The volume of suspension required for each dose will depend on the concentration of suspension that you have. The 2.5mg/mL suspension will require 2 mL twice daily, the 3mg/mL suspension will require 1.6 mL twice daily, the 5mg/mL suspension will require 1mL twice daily, the 10mg/mL suspension would require 0.5mL twice daily, the 15mg/mL suspension would require .33 mL daily, and the 20mg/mL suspension would require 0.25mL twice daily.

My cat takes 2.5 mg/day twice a day. (5 mg tablet cut in half). Which dosage of oral solution is that? I am confused about the ml listing. Thank you.?
-
The Methimazole Suspension is available in a variety of dosages. The dosage or concentration is described in milligrams/milliliter "mg/mL", which is the strength of the medication per 1 mL. The total amount of liquid in the bottle is described only in mL. So, methimazole suspension that is 2.5mg/mL, 15mL means that there is 2.5mg in 1mL and there is a total of 15mL of liquid in the bottle. If your cat currently takes 2.5mg tablets twice a day, you can order the 2.5mg/mL solution and you would administer 1mL of liquid twice a day. A 15mL bottle would last 7.5 days, or a 30mL bottle would last 15 days. If you would like a longer supply, you could also order the 5mg/mL solution and administer 0.5mL twice a day. A 15mL bottle would last 15 days, and a 30mL bottle would last 30 days. The Methimazole solution is also available in a variety of flavors in each strength.

I accidentally left my cat's bottle of Methimazole on the kitchen counter with the lid off and left for work and forgot to put in the refrigerator. I was gone for about 10 hours. I put back in the fridge when I got home. Is it still OK to give to my cat or is it spoiled??
-
None of our compounded suspensions require refrigeration. This can vary from pharmacy to pharmacy. You should follow the instructions on any medication bottle, and for concerns directly related to the storage and use of specific medications, contact the pharmacy where the medication was compounded.

i would like to know what flavors are the most popular. I will put in the food as my cat would not let me give this directly in the mouth. I have tried the pills and the product for the ear with no success - very fussy cat.?
-
The Methimazole suspension can be compounded with fish, chicken, or beef flavor. VetRxDirect uses a non-aqueous oil base when compounding methimazole suspension. The suspension does not require refrigeration. The amount for a one month supply will depend on the dose of the suspension. A quantity of 30 ml of a 5 mg/ml suspension will calculate to a 30 day supply if giving 1 ml daily. Please be aware that if your cat does not eat all of the food that the suspension is applied to, your cat will not receive the full dose of the medication. Confirm with your veterinarian the correct dose for your pet.
