- Contact your veterinarian immediately if you notice the infection is not healing or is getting worse.

I Love This Site!
I have had a happy experience using Mometamax Otic Suspension for my Cocker Spaniel's ears. She has special dietary concerns and she is prone to intermittent ear issues. This product has eased these issues and provided me with peace of mind for the overall ear health of my pet, Dixie Yankee Doodle Dixie.

Made my 8 Year old Lab DEAF
I brought my 8 year old, fur baby in to a regular visit to the vet. They noticed some yeast in his ears and prescribed 7-8 drops/ear for 14 days along with Prednisone. After a few days we noticed he wasn't hearing well, but shrugged it off to being tired from his meds. After 7 days of application, we finally realized our Moose, who 7 days prior could hear a pin drop, was 80-90% deaf. It is heart-breaking to us and to him--he is so confused and sad.
We have reported to the vet and Merck Animal Health. It is a known, but not too common side effect, that impacts mostly older dogs, and/or any dog with a perforated ear drum. Our vet confirmed when we brought him back the next day that his eardrums were intact, but he still lost his hearing. Luckily, his hearing is slowly coming back after 2+ weeks (maybe 50-60% hearing now), but many people have reported their pets never regaining hearing. Please be careful and ask your vet about possible side effects from this medication or any medication with Gentamyacin in it (the antibiotic is what causes the ototoxicity).
Steer clear if you have a pet who is older or any pet that doesn't allow the vet to look deep inside the ear canal to ensure no perforations. If you notice hearing changes in your pet, discontinue the medication immediately and return to your vet. I had not received that advice and we are learning the hard way, but hope to spare you all the pain of what we have gone through.

Caused almost immediate 100% deafness in our healthy dog
From FloridaComments about Mometamax Otic SuspensionOur beloved cavapoo was 100% healthy and super responsive to verbal cues, an outstanding communicator. At her physical, vet said ears look good but swab showed infection, gave us these drops. After 2-3 days, she is 100%, scared, nervous. Horrific. -

Mometamax recommended by VET for ear issues
From Port Saint Lucie, FloridaComments about Mometamax Otic SuspensionWe have 2 cats, one consistently chews the ears on the other till they are cut and bleeding. The VET recommended MOMETAMAX for this problem. With MOMETAMAX, the cuts heal very quickly, and the taste deters the agressor cat for chewing on the ears. -
great product, easy to administer

Q & A
-
How often does this product cause deafness in canines and if it does, how can the FDA still approve its use??
-
Deafness caused by Mometamax Otic Suspension is categorized as a rare and serious side effect. The exact incidence is not listed by the manufacturer. The package insert from Mometamax carries the following warnings: “The use of these components has been associated with deafness or partial hearing loss in a small number of sensitive dogs (eg, geriatric). The hearing deficit is usually temporary. If hearing or vestibular dysfunction is noted during the course of treatment, discontinue use of MOMETAMAX Otic Suspension immediately and flush the ear canal thoroughly with a nonototoxic solution.” Please consult with your veterinarian to determine if your pet is at risk of deafness or hearing damage from use of Mometamax otic suspension. In regards to FDA approval of drugs, a concise summary is that drugs must be shown to be both safe and effective before acquiring approval from the FDA. There is a large amount of information and resources available directly from the FDA that would better answer your question. How can I tell that I am putting the correct amount of drops into the canal if the nozel goes into canal? Can I keep nozel up where I can see how much I am adding then massage it in??
-
You are correct that Mometamax Otic Suspension is administered directly into the ear canal. Per manufacturer instructions, the nozzle should not come into contact with the dog itself in order to reduce the risk of contamination. The nozzle can be disinfected with rubbing alcohol if necessary. You should position the nozzle so that the drops are going into the ear canal in a manner that you can count the number of drops while also avoiding contact between the dog and the nozzle. After you’ve counted the drops a few times and are comfortable with the volume of suspension being used, you can simply squeeze enough to get approximately the same volume. Too much medication isn’t harmful, though it could result in wasted product and a mess. Any excess medication can be wiped off with cotton balls.

In the 15 g bottle, should the bottle be full or is there just a pre-measured amount in the bottle. Should the bottle feel most of the way empty??
-
Mometamax has a pre-measured amount of solution in each bottle which is determined by the manufacturer. It is also common for manufacturers to leave an air space at the top of the bottle when packaging liquids.

Can you use beyond expiration date?
-
Mometamax Otic Suspension contains a combination of gentamicin sulfate, mometasone furoate monohydrate, and clotrimazole. I was wondering if this drug can have any effect on humans, since my dog has been on it for a few days now and likes to lay on the same carpet my 2 year old plays on, if it can affect our skin or do something else since it's a steroid? ?
-
Mometamax Otic Suspension does contain a corticosteroid, as well as an antibiotic and an antifungal. All of the active ingredients in this drug are also used on humans for their respective indications. It is commonly used in dogs for otitis externa (ear infection). When administering your dose, the ear canal should be clean and dry. Wash your hands after administering the drops as this would be the most common time to come into contact with the medication. If administered correctly, hands were properly washed, and no large spills have occurred, it would be very unlikely to cause any harm to you or your child. Thank you, VetRxDirect
