Neo Poly Dex for dog's ears
I have a 14 year old wire haired fox terrier, Alexander. For the past 3 years I've had a very difficult time protecting the pet from ear infection. LSU Veterinary Medicine, Baton Rouge, Louisiana in Fall 2016 recommended to my veterinarian using Neo Poly Dex in Alex' ears to control yeast infection. I currently use 2 drops in each ear, every other day. I was using B&L drops in Alex' ears until Spring 2017, when B&L eliminated distribution for use in animals. (Presumably because of shortage for human use in eyes) So, I found the Sandoz brand Neo Poly Dex manufactured by Alcon Labs which has the same ingredients as the B&L drops in April 2017 and switched to that brand. With the Neo Poly Dex drops and the use of Virbac Epi-Otic ear cleanser, used 2-3 times per week, Alex is now having much better ear exams and less cleaning every 2-3 weeks to protect his hearing.

Good product. However, it did not stop the tear discharge...
Good product. However, it did not stop the tear discharge of my puppy's left eye. So I am not sure if the vet was correct in prescribing this medication.

Q & A
-
My dog has been on this product for 4 months once a day. He has high kidney and liver values. Could these drops have elevated them??
-
Neomycin / Polymyxin / Dexamethasone Ophthalmic is an antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections in the eyes. The effects of this medication are usually localized, the drops do not get absorbed by the body. The elevated kidney and liver values could be caused by a number of factors and your pet’s veterinarian can interpret the lab results and make specific recommendations based on your pet’s health history.
Verified Answer -
Depending on the dosage it can be absorbed systemically even if administered through eye drops. Yes, it may cause these elevated levels. I know from first hand experience with my own dog.

My cat was prescribed neo, poly b and dexamethasone for conjunctivitis with inflammation. Can it be given while also using terramycin??
-
Neomycin/Polymyxin B/Dexamethasone and Terramycin both contain the active ingredient polymyxin B. While this is not a contraindication for concurrent use, it may be unnecessary to double up on the medication. Please speak to your veterinarian regarding the use of these products and your cat.

Dumb question. I can't open the bottle...?
-
The Neo/Poly/Dex Ophthalmic suspension bottle has a safety seal that must be removed before the bottle can open. This can be done with a scissors or using your fingers to pull at the perforated seams on the safety seal. After removing the safety seal, you should be able to twist the cap on the bottle to open it. The ointment will typically have a protective plastic ring connected to the cap that must be broken off prior to use. This could be accomplished by twisting the cap until the plastic ring breaks free. If you are experiencing difficulty opening the bottle, you may also contact our pharmacy for assistance.
