What is Novolin Insulin by Novo Nordisk for Dogs and Cats?
- Insulin is a hormone that is naturally produced by the pancreas to convert sugar (glucose) in the blood to energy for the body.
- Insulin therapy is prescribed to dogs and cats with diabetes. Diabetic animals are either unable to produce their own insulin or cannot use it properly.

- Novolin is a U-100 insulin. U-100 means that each milliliter of insulin is divided into 100 dosing units.
- The insulin in Novolin R is called Regular insulin. Regular insulin is a regular or short-acting insulin.
- The insulin in Novolin N is called NPH insulin. NPH insulin is an intermediate-acting insulin.
- Novolin 70/30 combines Regular and NPH insulin. It contains 70% NPH and 30% Regular.

Q & A

My dog is on Novolin N (100 units) 10 ml. I give her 6 units every 12 hours. My question is the syringe. I am using a 3/10 ml/cc syringe. Is this the correct syringe for this insulin??
-
Administration of Novolin N should be done with U100 syringes to ensure your pet gets the correct dosage. The 3/10 ml/cc (U100) syringe is the best syringe for you to be using for your dog. Overall you want to use the smallest volume of syringe in order to make the dose easier to measure. The 3/10 ml/cc is the smallest insulin syringes are available in.

My Dogs fur is coming out by the handfuls after using this medication for the past three months. Is this normal.?
-
Manufacturers of veterinary insulin have observed hair loss in cats in studies of their medication though they were unable to determine if the observation was a result of the medication, underlying condition, or disease state. There have been reports of hair loss associated with the use of insulin in dogs by other pet owners and veterinary professionals. It would be in your best interest to contact your veterinarian to discuss your pet's condition. Thank you, VetRxDirect

My dog has started itching since being on this insulin! Is she allergic to it? If so what should she be switched to? She is miserable. The vet has tried steroids and antibiotics but I am concerned if it is her insulin.?
-
Novolin N is a human labelled insulin that many veterinarians use for pets. While it is very unlikely that your pet is allergic, there still may be a product within the insulin your dog may be reacting to. We understand the frustration of trying numerous products and not getting rid of the itching. We would suggest having a discussion with your veterinarian about options of switching to a different insulin of their choice. There are other human labelled products and animal labelled products like vetsulin which may work for your dog. Thank you, VetRxDirect

I can buy Novolin N (100 units) at Walmart for $25.00, why is there such a large cost difference in your pricing for the same insulin? I really liked your products before and would like to continue using your services>?
-
Bill, The cost of Novolin N depends on the acquisition cost for a pharmacy, which depends on the distributor and manufacturer prices. Often times the published prices of a medication at a human pharmacy take into account insurance payments, and may not consider orders for pets paid for without insurance. Our current price accurately reflects the current acquisition cost. We do periodically update prices as costs change. Thank you, VetRxDirect

JUST FOUND OUT MY CAT HAS DIABETES. MY VET PRESCRIBED LANTUS FOR HIM. CAN I USE NOVOLIN INSTEAD. THANKYOU FOR YOUR ADVICE?
-
Kristine, Novolin is considered a short acting insulin. Lantus is considered a long acting insulin. They would not be considered interchangeable. Maintaining proper blood glucose control is the goal and cats will need to be monitored closely. Follow directions from your veterinarian on injection schedule, dose, and blood glucose monitoring frequency to ensure optimal results in treating your cats diabetes. Thank you, VetRxDirect
