Product is too hard
From VirginiaComments about Ocu-GLOThe product was too hard! My dog took the gel capsules just fine but this product was too hard for her even when I broke it into for her. Since I did not know this until I opened it, I do not have an option to return it. Even after I cut the product in quarters, my small dog could not chew the pieces. I don't know what I can do with them now. A lot of money gone. -

Q & A

Does this product help for cataracts and possible glaucoma cause by cataracts... and or cataracts possibly caused by injury next to the eye socket (trauma)????? And how?????
-
Hi Zoey, OcuGLO Rx has a variety of antioxidants that combat oxidative stress especially the kind that is caused by inflammation and some of the ingredients have anti-inflammatory properties! However, they are not replacements for steroidal or non-steroidal antiinflammatory eyedrops, these are extremely important in directly addressing the inflammation caused by cataracts. By inhibiting the inflammation with eyedrops and antioxidants, the secondary glaucoma risk is diminished. The other very amazing new finding is that OcuGLO Rx has been shown to protect the retina from the increased intraocular pressure caused by glaucoma. Again, glaucoma needs its medications to lower the pressure but OcuGLO Rx can complement the traditional medications and help protect the cells in the retina from the damage caused by glaucoma. As far as trauma, antioxidants help cells heal and recover from any injury, so it is good for traumatic injuries too. But again, make sure the necessary medications are also used. OcuGLO Rx is excellent at supporting cells during disease and during recovery, when possible. It may help prevent or slow down the progression of cataracts. However, cataracts are not dissolvable and cannot be fixed or reversed with any drug or supplement. The same is true about glaucoma and even retinal degeneration. Once there is damage, nothing can make the cells regrow or recover once they are gone. However, if the cells in the retina are not damaged, they can be protected by antioxidants and in some cases, vision can be maintained as long as the disease is controlled. Thanks for your great question and we hope this helps! - Dr. Carmen Colitz & The Animal Necessity Team

OUR MALTESE IS ABOUT 11 LBS. WOULD ONE SMALL PILL A DAY BE ENOUGH? WE DON'T WANT TO OVERDOSE.?
-
As you already know, dosing for Ocu-GLO Rx™ is determined by weight. We recommend the medium/large dog formula for your 11 lbs Maltese, as there is no risk of overdosing with Ocu-GLO Rx. In fact, a one year clinical trial designed to test safety and palatability was conducted by two board-certified veterinary ophthalmologists in 2006/2007. None of the dogs in the study had any aberrant or abnormal bloodwork changes due to taking Ocu-GLO Rx. In fact, a few had a lowering of their serum cholesterol levels! However, if you decide to use the small dog formula, your Maltese should still thank you because some antioxidants are better than none!

We recently purchased Ocu-Glo (not our first time). When we opened it, the inside of the bottle was orange and the pills had orange residue on them that came off on our hands (not the case previously). Should we use these pills or request a new bottle??
-
Hi Jim, The residue you've described is actually the contents of a gelcap that ruptured in transport and the ingredients have leaked out onto the other capsules. The distinct color (and taste) is a result of the potency of the ingredients, particularly the Lutein extract, which is derived from marigold flowers, giving it a very orange hue. The remaining gelcaps are fine to use, although you may want to wipe them off because of the bitter taste of the ingredients. VetRxDirect.com will happily replace the bottle if you would like (simply contact VetRxDirect customer service), or you can use the remainder of the bottle - whatever is easier for you. Thanks for your question!

what are the side effects of ocu=glo??
-
Hi Devi, The majority of side effects with OcuGLO Rx have actually been beneficial ones. These include softer shinier coat, glossier eyes, and more energy in older dogs that had been a little slower. Negative side effects have been minimal or rare. Dogs with sensitive stomachs may have looser stools and, on rare occasion, vomiting has occurred. For these uncommon cases, we suggest stopping the product for 48 hours, then restarting at half the dose every other day for a few days. If all is okay, try daily. One other trick for sensitive stomachs is to try freezing the gel caps before giving them to the sensitive dog.

Devi, Ocu-GLO Rx™ is a nutraceutical product used to promote healthy eye function. There are no reported side effects from the manufacturer. It is advised to discontinue use of Ocu-GLO Rx™ one week prior to surgery. There is a potential increase risk of bleeding due to the grape seed extract and omega 3 fatty acids found in the supplement. Pregnant or lactating animals should not be given Ocu-GLO Rx™, as some of the ingredients have not been tested in these animals. The manufacturer recommends for the capsule to be swallowed whole due to potential staining from the liquid contents inside the capsule. How can I get my old picky poodle to take the ocuglo capsules?
-
Here are a few tips & tricks to help get your poodle to take Ocu-GLO Rx! Because of the bitter taste and strong color of the ingredients, it is best to get your dog to swallow the pill whole. This can be done more effectively if you lead with a pure treat that isn't hiding a pill (see #4). 1. Hide the gel cap in a soft treat like cheese. peanut butter or even a marshmallow. 2. Wrap the gel cap in a thin slice of sandwich meat, liver paste or even canned dog food. 3. Hide the gel cap in a Greenies Pill Pocket, which can be purchased at most pet stores or veterinary offices. 4. Try leading with a treat that does not have a gel cap hidden in it, follow with a treat that has the gel cap in it, then chase it with a third treat that is already in hand, so your dog quickly swallows the second treat eager to get the third. 5. You may also want to try pilling your poodle when hungry. 6. Finally, if all else fails, you can try the "professional method" in which you hold the dogs mouth open, place the pill as far back as you can, then hold the mouth shut for several seconds while blowing in its nose. This will cause the dog to swallow involuntarily. Be sure to praise him/her & provide a treat when done!

Will ocu-glo change the color of the dogs urine? Orange color. ?
-
Sue, The manufacturer of Ocu-GLO, Animal Necessity, does not list urine color change as an adverse reaction. The B vitamins in the supplement may however cause a change in urine color if given at higher-than-recommended doses. We recommend stopping the supplement for a period of time to see if the color change resolves and to contact your veterinarian for further advice to rule out other possibilities. My little Chinese Crested Powder Puff weighs 15.6 lbs. Which strength of Ocu-Glo should I get her? Small dogs or med to large? thank you.?
-
The manufacturer recommends for dogs 10-20lbs, to give 1 of the medium/large dog capsules once daily. Some dog owners with smaller dogs find that giving the larger capsule can be difficult, and giving two of the small dog strength capsules to your dog may make it easier to administer. The small dog strength has approximately half the amount of each ingredient compared to the medium\large dog strength and is approximately half the size of the medium\large dog strength capsule. I have a 2-1/2 yr old Golden that loves to play ball, but can not often follow it when it is thrown. My vet suggested Ocu-Glo. Would he have to take it for the rest of his life??
-
Ocu-GLO Rx is a nutraceutical product used to promote healthy eye function. There is no clinical evidence available at this time that supports using this product long-term, though, typically, eye supplements are used long-term. If you decide to use this product I would try a 6-month trial to determine whether or not this supplement is beneficial for your pet and then follow up with your veterinarian for further guidance. Thank you, VetRxDirect

-
How do you get a 12 pound dog to take the med. to large pills??
-
Sue, The Ocu-GLO Rx capsules can be opened and the liquid administered over food, however, the manufacturer warns that the contents of the capsule can stain, and it is better swallowed whole. The small dog strength has approximately half the amount of each ingredient compared to the medium\large dog strength and is approximately half the size of the medium\large dog strength capsule. Giving two of the small dog strength capsules to your dog may make it easier to administer. We do carry an over-the-counter product called Pill Pockets; which are functional treats that may help your pet take the medicine. Your dog's veterinarian may also be able to offer you some tricks for getting your dog to take the capsule. Thank you, VetRxDirect
